It\'s not looking good for next weekend

Was hoping for a trip to Cherbourg next weekend ending up in Guernsey to watch the St Peter Port hill climb, but its looking unlikely. The Met Office are forecasting Channel gales for Friday

NITON STRONG WESTERLY WINDS IN SHANNON WILL SPREAD EAST ON TUESDAY AND OVERNIGHT, REACHING ALL AREAS ON WEDNESDAY, WITH GALES POSSIBLE FOR A TIME NORTH OF SOLE, INCLUDING THE ENGLISH CHANNEL AND THAMES. MOST WINDS WILL DECREASE BY EVENING, BUT CONTINUING STRONG OVERNIGHT IN BISCAY AND FITZROY. STRONG WINDS RETURNING TO SHANNON BY THURSDAY MORNING. THEN EXTENDING ACROSS LUNDY, FASTNET AND INTO THE CHANNEL, DECREASING OVERNIGHT, BUT BECOMING CYCLONIC AND REACHING GALE FORCE ON FRIDAY

Interesting - Metcheck and ECMWF had light W winds for Friday with a dash of rain.

Re: It\'s not looking good for next weekend

Where I live (E.Kent) the forecast for 'tomorrow' is usually wildly wrong so I certainly don't take any notice of Friday's so-called forecast on a Monday!

Re: It\'s not looking good for next weekend

Looking at the met office synoptic charts, the big oniony thingie that's due to hit us (or more particularly Scotland) on Wednesday is shown as hanging around in the Faroe-Shetland channel until Saturday at least and keeping a strong westerly flow over the British isles, as they like to say.
I'd wait until Wednesday before taking it with too much seriousness, it may dissipate quicker than they think at the moment, although whatever happens there won't be shortage of wind.
I gave up planning on August bank holiday sailing years ago, 'cos it blows a hooley more often that not.

Re: To Honfleur or not to Honfleur ....

...that is the question for me.

yesterday the forecast went from 10kts SW to 25kts S/SE which was prob the same info as you got from the Met Office.

As I write winds have gone back to SW 10knots 2200hrs Fri and getting lighter as weekend progresses. Guess we will have to wait till Friday to p*** and get off the pot

Have a look at www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/avnpanel1.html which gives forecast synoptics for the next nine days. Of course it's reliability decays exponentially with time-ahead, but at present it shows the wind declining over Friday with modest westerlies on Saturday and Sunday (and Monday).

I much prefer synoptics to terse text. It enables you to work out what might happen if things move faster or slower than predicted, which I find is the main source of fallibility in forecasting.
