It's good to get out and take in some waves. Swinging on the hook tonight. First a swim, BBQ and slumber in this balmy weather.

Very envious!

Sold last year and currently boatless - the journey to our next boat is proving to be somewhat vexed and might end up with sails! :)

Greg, I'm sure it will be worth the wait in the end. :)

Good sleep last night swinging on the hook after a balmy hot day, nearly got heat stroke, had to put windscreen covers on but then late last night we had some electrical storms and showers.

Hope you have a long warm boating season ahead N, OF is looking good out there in her natural environment.

Any thoughts of a long cruise coming up? Your trip reports are a fantastic read :encouragement:

Hi Andie.
Cheers. Well on Friday evening we had the choice of turning to starboard out of the Marina to head down the tidal Shannon out to Dingle, but we decided instead to leave that for a few weeks when we reposition OF to the Cork coast for a month or so all going well. Instead we turned to port and headed into Lough Derg for the warm bank holiday weekend. Four glorious days and three restful nights swinging on the anchor at various locations around the vast lough. We popped into one harbour for a cycle but returned later to a nearby anchorage for a nights peace and quiet away from the crowds enjoying the sunny marina. Here's a few pics of the weekend. All the best.

Croissants just out of the oven for a light breakfast with fruit

Later that afternoon a brief visit to Mountshannon harbour for a short cycle and visit to the new Cafe.

Cafe Bia - Opened one month ago. We've had Brompton folk up bikes for 12 years now and they have transformed our cruising enabling us to explore ashore and access amenities.

A rather busy harbour on the June bank holiday weekend.

Later we moved out of the crowded harbour to anchor out for a nights peace and quiet.

On our final evening we headed down to the hydro electric dam for an evening snack before heading north to our anchorage for the night. This massive structure diverts the river Shannon into two channels, the original river path and a 10km long head race canal to the hydro turbines. In a few weeks time we will descend its 102ft sea lock.

Pre-dawn next morning at the anchorage in Killaloe bay.

Sunrise. Waking up to scenery like this is a real blessing and one of the best bits about cruising.

Our three nights swinging on the hook was one of our best weekends out and about for a while. The weather was pleasant with daytime temps of 23-25 degrees and winds F2 or less, and a good dose of sunshine.

You certainly know how to create an appealing boating story with a few well shot pics and associated descriptions. I even felt inspired to google map your cruise grounds, it's been a while since your last report via the Atlantic coast.
BTW, our little island home is very similar in size to the ROI, similar mid to high 20's temp in summer, but very little summer rain.

Besides yourself promoting the ideallic boating lifestyle in the ROI, Scubaman in the Baltic/Finland and Henryf, whether onboard his cruiseship or south coast UK and MapisM around IT, there's some serious talent out there!
All the best Noel.

Andie your comments and very kind and most humbling. We feel rather privileged to have access to both the SW coast and Lough Derg at the end of the Shannon and must regularly remind ourselves never to take it for granted. Believe it or not I left my bag of so called 'proper' camera gear at home and instead used my phone. Hopefully weather and health permitting will get a chance to share some pics next month from the unique Cork/Kerry cruising area. All the best, Noel.

Great post as ever OF.

Having had a couple of weeks a few years back on the Shannon and the Loughs it really is a wonderful cruisng ground.

Thanks for posting.

Great pics Noel and OF looks great.
A Broom 38 was our original plan and nearly bought a 39kl as you know but now really not sure - fuel price outlook may mean a motor sailer or a yacht for a bit of Med sailing. Still get tempted whenever I see a 38 though! :)

Looks amazing! Esp. those sunrise pics. It’s boating moments like those that just make everything so worth it.

I remember some of your earlier posts about anchoring in that beautiful area. Fantastic.

I would never have guessed that they are from a mobile phone, btw.

I love reading these cruise reports, thanks for posting.

Cheers Greg. When the sea state is nice we often plod along at 6-7kt displacement speed burning only 2gph, but she is still only 10ghp planing at an economic 16kt which is fast enough for even the longest one day passage leg. We've never had to cruise at the higher speeds of 18-22kt, nor WOT at 26kt.

On balmy hot days if time permits we potter along at only 5kt which is ultra quiet and comfy on the auto helm and potter about the boat like we are at home. Noel

Yes, that kind of boating was what attracted us to a 38 Noel. We used to do similar in our 41 sometimes but used a bit more fuel at 16 knots! Probably similar at the single figure speeds - we had the Perkins 300hp engines.

We are thinking long term and what we could do in retirement and some extensive coastal (possibly in the Med) and inland cruising will hopefully be part of the plan. The future of fuel cost on reduced income is therefore a major consideration. Could be a yacht for a few years to do the Med then a single engine mobo for inland. On the other hand another Broom such as the 38 could do both :)

Perhaps a single engined 38 from your part of the world......
