It\'s all a little fast this morning

This is my first autumn/winter by the river and I am amazed at what a wild thing it has become compared to only a few weeks ago. My neighbour's mooring has flooded so his boat is rafted up against ours on the pole mooring at the back. I thought it was only neighbourly to offer /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Try living on a boat in this weather

I've seen the Thames in some really bad moods.
Once saw the boat in front of mine half lifted out of the water by a big tree, roots and all, which had got caught under it in serious weather.

Ahhhh but thats your own fault for going on the lash rather than working on your boat /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I love it when the river is running like it is. Drifting downstream knowing full well you are exceeding the speed limit, then dropping into gear and doing 9 knots while staying within the speed limit travelling back against the stream.

I am finding it to be enthralling too, such a wild thing. Very exciting. But I am glad I bought waders yesterday!

Speeds largely depend on location. Obviously bridge arches are faster, depth and width of river have a marked effect too as does distance to weir. The river is higher just upstream of a bridge. I've know a 4' hump at Wallingford Bridge before now. That was quite exciting negotiating it in a 13'6" Dorey with a 40 h.p. on the back.

You'd better just hope and pray that the environment Agency has got its act together re the operation of the Jubilee River.
back in 2003 we flooded badly as did hundreds of others when the JR was opened for the first time.. This year is the first time since then that we've had serious rainfall. Keep an eye on your mooring lines for the next few days!!!!!!

Well there is very little going down the Jubilee River at the moment, had a look yesterday.

Beggars belief why they built it if they dont use it - or are they bricking it that if they let it go - that Chertsey will flood again???

Does anybody if, when they built the Jubilee River, they thought about linking it to the Queen Mary reservoir so they could pump water into the reservoir at times of drought but heavy rainfall, like from August onwards? Or is that too much like a good idea?

Well the whole thing was unecessary - simply dredging the river might have been a simpler solution.

Re: It\'s all a little fast this morning

Hmmm, now my front mooring is underwater and on the back one the water is coming through the timbers. The boat has settled "up" but I now see that the forward line is looser than the aft, so the bow is out a little in the stream and u can feel the power of the current stopping me from pulling her back in. It is dark, I'm on my own, and had a beer or two, so I will trust the strength of the jetty.....

Not being a Forumite of this particular Parish, would you mind me asking a daft question, please?

Surely the speed limit (bank conservation etc?) is speed through water, and not over ground?
