Italian marinas at a sensible price??

We are leaving Almerimar in about a week and intend to 'coast-hop' to Greece, about 1900 miles in all. We hope to do it in about eight (comfortable) weeks but, in the event we are held-up on route, we may find we have to leave the boat somewhere for a couple of months before we can get back to her.

This could well be the west coast of Italy.. so, my question is...
Can anyone suggest where on the Italian west coast we could leave her without paying horrific prices? Probably for July and August, either in the water or on the hard. My insurance company insists it must be in a marina.

Also, if anyone can offer guidelines on Italian marina prices for a 37 footer I would much appreciate it.

Crikey - a marina berth on the W coast of Italy for two months in July and Aug is going to cost you. Have you considered changing your insurer, and leaving her in Mahon, on a mooring? There might be other places with affordable moorings if you remove that restriction though Italy is renowned for crime - the marinas have very tall fences round them, and security lighting.

I suspect that Pantaenius would accept a mooring in an appropriate place, you could ask.
 
A while back on another thread someone posted these details of an italian marina, www.marina-sibari.it - unfortunately it is in the foot of italy so may not be suitable - seemed reasonable prices but having never sailed around italy couldn´t confirm.
 
Marina del Sole in Cagliari on the south east coast of Sardinia is the cheapest I have come across in the western Med. Very nice place too. I paid 19 euros per night for 39 foot two years ago. You might have to pay ten times that on the north east coast of Sardinia in July/Aug. Easyjet flies to Cagliari.
 
FORGET IT you are unlikely to even get in anywhere in those months if you do you can expect to pay about e60+ per night
we have a 9mtr cat & were turned away by three places even those with TRANSIT berths due to lack of space, those we did get in never experienced security problems but have been warned by friendly coast guard NOT to go to napoli we are on the west coast now leaving here end of the month heading for corfu.

Not much good news there then, is there? I guess I will just have to push-on a bit more to be sure of getting to Greece - SWMBO will not be best pleased though.

Try Roccella Ionica on the south coast of Italy. It was still unfinished in 2005 when we called in, and looked like it had been that way for many years. No water or electric so no charges. Maybe there is someone else on this forum who has been there more recently.
 
I was in Roccella Ionica on 4th June 2007, it's OK. Water and electric was available on my berth, though I took neither. I don't recall there being any lift out facilities! First five nights there are free, didn't wait to find out what is charged after that. Watch out for the sandbar at the entrance.

Was in Milazzo prior to that and it cost 60 euros per night, so don't go there!
 
Currently in Sibari, but leaving for Greece tomorrow. Very safe place to leave the boat with good marina and yard services, but few facilities (shops, restaurants etc) if you want to stay on the boat. Well worth checking out the website.
Cheap public transport from Sibari to Lamezia, Brindisi and Bari airports, but it takes half a day's travelling times.
Otherwise agree about Rocella Ionica and M. de Sole in Sardinia.
 
hi cynthia; Sibari was reported on a thread earlier here to always silt up in the winter and needed dredging to get boats out. Can you please update us on the actual real situation?
 
The channel is completely open at the moment, although it did silt up, as always, over winter. Local government are responsible for keeping it open, consequently it is dredged on a regular basis. In fact there is a dredger permently on site, indeed it was operating today as a matter of fact. Subsequently the channel is open for the whole summer. Two or three years ago they did not manage to dredge, but the boats 'trapped' in the marina were given the option of being transported by low loader to another port in order to launch . I think this was very unusual though, as there is normally free access in and out of the marina.
Staff here are incredibly helpful and we have had absolutely no problems whatsoever in the two years we have stored the boat here.

thanks cynthia, very helpful information as I am going that way soon. You don't happen to know how deep they dredge the channel do you? I need 2.3 meters minimum.
 
Agree with others, Marina Del Sol in Cagliari is cheap and.... characterful! There arent many places with an honesty bar and .... ah well you will just have to visit and see. Delightful Chaos. Cagliari is also a gorgeous city.

Oh....and is Gary still there? and that crazy sard Enrico?
