Is the thermostat knackered? On mine the contacts had corroded so that although it sounded like it was clicking in it was not making the circuit.
Easiest way to test is to unscrew the thermostat from its mounting and short out the two contacts. If the compressor kicks in you have found the fault. ( use an insulated wire bridge! ) If not then check the voltage at the thermostat, using boat negative as a reference, one contact should have something on it when idle.
I replaced my thermostat with a nice electronic version with temperature display, fault detection and alarm for little more than the cost of a replacement clunky old mechanical one.
I installed one a few months ago and it stopped working, the pump ran continuously but not cooling.
One of the pipe couplings had come adrift slightly and the coolant had escaped. On the underside of the couplings there was a slight oily residue on the offending one.
Regassed and now good as new.
dont chuck it away most things on them are replaceable or repairable I had my 12/240 volt gizmo repaired by a tv repair man £15 and when the pump control went ( not the pump) the manufacturers supplied a new one, this did however fail again and the tv repairman sorted that out too.
