Hi all, with summer hols looming and a few weeks off work, we’re planning a few day trips from Poole, one being over to the IoW for the first time. Likely Alum bay for a day trip but I know loads of you are old hands here, so a) any tips around best locations, best beaches, maybe things not to do/be aware of,and b) if weather conditions allow, where’s the best location to drop the hook for an overnight ?

Loads of spots worth looking out for, Totland Bay, Alum Bay, Yarmouth makes a lovely stop, Newtown Creek, buoy's get snapped up early on but usually enough room to anchor, the Medina up to Newport, depending on what you draw, Cowes, Osbourne Way ..... it goes on and on

If anchoring overnight I would pop over to Keyhaven as more sheltered and calm.
 
Note that a lump of shingle off Hurst Castle, claimed by a local sailing club as “Lentune Island” has appeared on the chart 😂🤣😂

Yep that's what I'd do if it was my first time.
Also,not sure if the OP is seeking passage advice, so apologies in advance if not.
Westerlies I forecast for the weekend so if you were to leave Poole on a rising tide you'll get a more comfortable and slightly quicker trip. Not massive tides or high wind, but it'll help. A quick look suggests to me, on Saturday you want to be at Hurst before 9am or after 16.00 .

He'll have the RTI fleet coming right at him.
 
Well let’s hope the OP made it to Yarmouth - on the rocks is still going strong and friendly helpful staff and facilities in marina much improved we noticed on Thursday The trip to Lymington on Friday was not so comfortable though 🤣
