Isle of Wight sealine crash with injuries……updated

My wife can’t see in the dark, she’s never that happy, and is liable to take to her bunk if it gets dark on us. That’s one reason we have a fast sailboat, we can usually make decent distance between stopovers.

Where in the mainland? Lymington mostly, and they’ll be mostly DFLs. I have seen a father designate his roughly 10 year old son as RIB driver after a session in the Hut. Fine, you may say, until you observe the 2 supercharged 250hp Mercurys on the back of it. I would let my 31 year old son drive that unsupervised, but only just.
Having worked as a bridge watch keeper and navigator in the world's finest navy, I'd spent many a happy night at sea, hence the reason it didn't even occur to me. I'm not sure what a DFL is? ah just explained before I hit send. I've never been to the Hut is it worth a trip?

i want to go for the fights.

I take it you berth in Southampton
Yarmouth.

And the Hut is ok, for the money. It’s not outstanding food wise, yet outside my eating out budget for any but special occasions. We could cycle there from home easily, but generally don’t. The Waterfront, near the boat in question, Totland, is IMHO better value. However, never seen a fight there, though most of the patrons seem to be 3 sheets to the wind when they leave.

The Hut venue appeals but the clientele don’t - you would have thought On the Rocks in Yarmouth a more apposite venue for such mobo even if the dress sense has changed somewhat since the early days.

Call me what you like, but I cannot conceive of forgetting my insurance or doing 25knots inshore through a crowded anchorage, in the dark, pissed out of my brain. Cos that's what happened.
Whilst I completely agree with you that the cause of this accident does seem to be down to one substance which, given the injuries sustained, is an outrageously stupid and very avoidable thing.

But at sea things do go wrong and that is where I have "some" sympathy for the line "there but for the grace of God"

Alcohol and high speed are a lethal mix.

The Hut helping pi55ed people climb aboard their fast boats must have some blame.

Night boating in the Solent is a challenging undertaking. Obviously loads of shipping movements but the main issue is light pollution from the shores. I spent many an evening teaching advanced power boating in the dark finding various markers off Cowes and generally getting peeps to understand how much you rely on depth perception in everyday life…..and that its gone at sea in the dark…..until it’s too late.

alcohol and skippering don’t make for good bed fellows…….at night, its just crazy

I have been, it was very nice, but it was a surprise at some of the clientele, and I ain't no snob.

It is a venue that with that sort of day out, will involve quite a bit of booze.
The drinking and high speed motor boating is pretty poor form, whatever the social standing. We don’t know if the Totland accident was actually connected do we? I’ve seen people pretty pissed after a picnic lunch on board.

I had read in the CP that some clientele objected to menu offered having parked the gin palace in the bay. Many good venues if you can get in but will look for Waterfront -we tend to think the roads run out at Cowes if land based. . There seems to be a new restaurant venue opened near the old Vectis Tavern which might be worth a try before too long though.

Couldn’t agree more Mr G. I do a lot of night time work, and objects, land formations etc., alway appear a lot closer than they are in reality. Not sure if that is related just to my vision or not?

Think I'm in the minority here - We love it at the hut - had plenty of really good long summer afternoons there over the years.

Its our UK version of Anjuna nd we try and visit both often :)
