Just re-read this, being John McCarthy & Sandy Toksvig's account of their sail around Britain with Tom Cunliffe on Hirta and am wondering if TC has ever written about this trip?

Havent read the book, but I remember seeing the series on BBC World quite a few years ago now - thought it was excellent!
I think that TC sold Hirta soon after, when she was riding on the crest of the wave of being a classic celebrity, and then there was some contretemps about survey of Hirta, and her condition......

I think Sandy and John let him off lightly in the book.Even so there is a definite undercurrent of their personality clashes with TC .
It must be difficult on a boat like that with 2 complete novices aboard never the less he new what he was letting himself in for and happilly took the money.

shouldn't it be easier with a couple of novices and a very experienced sail-training expert?
I've heard it said a novice will do as they are told and not make counter decisions the way someone who knows a bit but not it all will.
