As per the title, friend bought a 20yo sun odysey 26 with a dead 1gm10 and he told me he's going to order a new one.
Thought it's out of production tbh hence asking..
Wonder what would be a more "modern" option to suggest to him.

Cheers

They were still in production last year and I presume still going. Expensive engine for what they are. There are more refined and cheaper alternatives from Beta, etc. lots of people replace them with 14hp Beta or Nanni engines.

Personally I love the 1GM10 for its simplicity and frugal nature, closer to a steam engine than modern diesels.

Might be worth your friend getting it looked at if the bottom end and gearbox are ok you can have the top end rebuilt for a 5th of the price of a new one.

Beta 10 or 14 is virtually identical in size but a little heavier. 2 cylinder fresh water cooled so much more sophisticated. Quieter and smoother. I replaced a 1GM with a Nanni 14 (essentially the same as Beta but painted blue). 20mm longer, A bit wider at the aft end and engine mounts not quite the same. Needs beds about 10mm higher from memory and a new shaft coupling to mate with the TMC box. Exhaust on the other side, but Beta do an adaptor. Water inlet 3/4" rather than 1/2". Otherwise as simple a replacement as you can get.

In the UK the price difference has narrowed and the Yanmar is now not much cheaper.

Thanks, I'll pass the info.
Waiting for some pics justifying the need for a new engine but from description I'm not convinced tbh

If a new engine is required Marine Enterprises do trade in deals (inc. 1GM) your mate might be interested in exploring, see here. I seem to remember some on here have used this company & been happy with their service...

Big weaknesses of 1GM are related to internal corrosion from water getting back in through the exhaust, wrecking the valves and pre combustion chamber and possibly bending con rod. New head is expensive (£1k+) but rest of engine is bullet proof so financially there is quite a lot of headroom between a rebuild and a new engine.

Friend had his 2GM20 redone with a c/head from OZ. Eventually I swopped it for a Beta 16. IIRR Beta is actual hp. While Yanmar is about 18hp, so not that much difference. Very happy with result.

The 1GM was outdated 20 years ago. That was when I replaced mine with a Beta, just no comparison .

Despite that still in production and used for example by Cornish Crabbers in the Shrimper range. Agree the Beta is better for a yacht auxiliary, particularly the 14 which i used to replace a 1GM. However there are still some who prefer the simplicity of the Yanmar and don't need the extra power.

1GM10 is a better bet than the older 1GM. I fixed up a 1GM that had sat for 11yrs in a yacht. Likely had rainwater up to a high level. Worst bit was corrosion in the exhaut valve and seat, required an insert seat and new valve. Not to mention the oil way under the water pump that had disintergrated. Worked all right after, but then got replaced with a 1GM10. More from owners want, than actual need. HP from the 1GM is more like 6 or 7, whole the 1GM10 is 9 ish. Certainly takes a bit to get the 27fter going, even at full chat.

Its now all coming back to me. The family developed their own sign language due to the noise, If you opened it up to full revs the whole boat started to vibrate and everyone came up to the cockpit. Good putt putt putt for the single sailor. My wife once said why does a boat have a noisy diesel engine in the middle of the lounge. She left me soon after that. Thats why it is a good engine for a single sailor.

There were some Impalas which had DIY retrofit 1GM10 motors.
Maybe they vibrate less in a heavier boat.

Personally I would suggest upgrading to a Beta14 would increase the boat's value or 'ease of selling' in the future.
I was certainly keen to get the bigger 2 cylinder Beta when I bought our boat.
Fresh water cooling offers the chance of a calorifier too.

OTOH, parts like pistons and injectors for Yanmar might be obtained very cheaply from one of the Chinese versions?
AFAIK, they are all air cooled so heads and barrels not applicable.

I remember going to Brightlingsea to the main Yanmar stealer, to buy an impellor. I think he charged me £24. I had just been to Argos and had bought a chrome two speed adjustable height fan. £20 Beautiful fan. I held this pathetic piece of rubber between my thumb and finger and told him the story. I told the guy that years ago he would have been a highway man.
