About to chop this down. Any use?

I reckon about 15ft useable length.

If you have time, and what I would do, is lop off as many branches as you can reach before you fell it. Then remove the rest, put it on trestles, chop off the bark, and have a look.
But it looks rather small, with too many branches, for a yacht spar, depends on what you want.
Please take photos of the results..
Hopefully a real expert will be posting shortly, to say it's good enough for Cape Horn, or not even worth burning, or somthing.

A small tree with lots of knots isn't neccessarily useless, my 1950's boat was fitted out in Bermuda with Bermudan Cedar, technically a softwood but actually very hard, with a lovely grain, lots of knots, and a perfumed aroma if you drill it.

I bow to LGBC's greater experience in these matters but I would not hesitate to burn it in a closed fire. Too many knots in a small moot (trunk); they are point sof weakness, or rather they are points of extra strength which makes the bending curve uneven.

Also it will be full of resin, and clog your tools.

I suppose you could make a boat hook out of it if you wanted a memorable bit of timber.

When you fell it, do be careful to keep your hands and gloves off the sawn ends, as the resin is the second stickiest substance known to man,

I reciprocally bow to Sarabande's greater experience :) when I wonder if it wouldn't coat the inside of your flue with sticky, inflammable resin?

How about making some Stockholm tar type stuff, I've always fancied trying that.

Thanks all.

I intend to chop it down. So its a free spar for anyone that wants it.

Its on IOW and I will even deliver it free to Yarmouth Harbour.

Perhaps I should wait till the OGA is in town next and see if anyone wants it.
