OK sorry, bit over the top.... perhaps i shld have added IMHO.
Got nothing against newbies and questions where the qeustioner has thought about the subject, but I DO have an issue with the attitude of " i wont bother thinking about anything, i'll just ask someone and do exactly wot they say. then when it all goes tits-up i know who to blame"

But it does seem that you are having a go at and demeaning "newbie" BAYliner owners which will probably have the effect of frightening some of them them off.

not sure if yr reply was to me, but i've got nothing against Bayliners, or other US built boats.
All makes have their strong and weak points, and none are 'better' than another in general, it's only when judged against specific criteria that 'good' or 'bad' can be affixed.
fr example........ Fairline squaddies are Cr*p boats

yer average new bod doesn't know that the question he's posing (should I buy this model?) is unanswerable or has been raised xxx times before. Many older style internet forums had an faq section that newcomers were advised to check b4 bothering old lags with their queries- dunno if that would help?

Is mbc like porridge? & if so who's fletcher & who's genial harry grout.

or maybe it's the "village"?

FAQs

As the same question about which first boat to buy appears several times each week, surely the FAQ section would be a good place to store what's been asked and answered before, as you say, direct them there first. The same question week after week does get boring, but for the newbie it needs an answer and isn't at all boring, just unlikely to get much of a response.

Hi All

As a newbie I must admit that I did hesitate about asking so many questions regarding my first boat.... but after the incredible response I received from several forum members (who I have thanked in one of my previous posts) I was encouraged to ask my “Stupid Questions”. It became transparent that hlb was getting fed up with some of the posts but even they gave me some help, even if they were in the context of I know a lot and you know very little. I have read many books and magazines but nothing beats the input of members who are actually out there and writing about their experience/opinions on this forum. It is all well and good reading about the Shetland being an ideal first boat in a magazine but what happens if you don’t fancy owning such an old boat or 6 months down the road/slipway you are fed up with it and want something a bit nicer.

It is no good making this an elitist sport looking down on us mere mortals from your flybridge. When someone posts that they want to spend 15k on a boat plus god knows how much more on extra equipment, mooring etc on a sport/pastime that they are new to it can’t help.

I take the point about input but some of the newbie threads have opened up all sorts of discussions between regular members, which has created its own input. My advice would be to any member who is fed up with newbie questions is first don’t read them and secondly if you can’t resist the read don’t post back.

I am a restaurateur (Chef Patron) and if I had a pound for every time I was asked, “Do you cook at home”, “What do you think of J.Oliver, G Ramsey etc” “How do you cook x” “Which restaurants do you eat in” I would be able to buy a flybridge now. We all have questions asked in life that have been said before or seem a bit inane, however I have always extended these questions with the common courtesy that they deserve.

As far as Bayliners are concerned even I know that they are built to a cost formula. As Your Motor Boat says regarding the Bayliner 2855 Ciera Sunbridge “Bayliners are built to a price, but you get a lot of boat for your money” is it any surprise that so many first timers go for a Bayliner?

Sooooh sorry, didn't realise that this Forum was private club for old stagers who generally just take the p--s out of newcomers and Bayliners. Everybody has to start somewhere with any hobby/interest and the obvious place to start is a forum dedicated to ones chosen interest. There is no obligation to reply to any post and it might liven things up a bit if there was an injection of new blood with new ideas and queries , it would make a change from all of the boring 'in crowd' twaddle that goes on at the moment.

Think you've got hold of the wrong end of the stick!

Don't think anyone's knocking new comers, can't remember any new comer having the piss taken out of him /her, just might be better if there was a FAQ section for oft repeated questions. Also think most people secretly admire Bayliner for producing so many popular boats, even if they don't want one thenselves. Haven't noticed much boring in crowd twaddle, that seemed to stop some time ago. All IMHO.

<hr width=100% size=1>

But your not reading whats written. No ones knocking newbies or Bayliners. I'm just trying to jolt this forum back to what it is. MoBo chat. And look at the result.

A post from TCM on Silent Mooring.

LJS on sinking dinghys.

A start the engines thread. Dave Snelton.

And some more that I have not got round to yet.

Now it's interesting again and fun. Not depressing!!

All achived overnight. Ok I might have rocked the boat a bit.
Tough.

As for in crowd. Please re-phrase that to input crowd. Or helpfull crowd, or folks that met here and go off sailing crowd. Then theres the in crowd that have provided in there own time. Free web posting sights for pictures. Parties at folks houses. Or on there boats, Invites to stay on Yachts in the med, days out for 30 odd boats, I think is the record. But loads of meetings going on all the time. Big and small. Free. And every ones welcome, new and old.

Now if thats the boring incrowd. Fair enough.

Re: Clearly making an impression

I'm alive and well and contributing the same drivel as always. probably less on Mobo than I used since (tugs place where forelock used to be) I know my place.

In fact I've lurked around Mobo for some time. The place did get very unhappy after lots of silly content from 'contente_un' but I'm sure it'll get up to planing speed again pretty soon.

Well, it's no good coming along now it's been mended. My PM box has made me blush..../forums/images/icons/blush.gif

If I sounded like I was having a go at newbies, Bayliners or any other fringe faction, I was not. But sorry anyway. Enough said.
