We had a fantastic evening sight along that coast: a bit further West (Maranhao state) they use similar sail plans but a planked hull, two crews one steers the other hangs outside holding a rope in his hands in a trapeze-like style. 10-20 boats all sailing back to shore at the same time, sails in all different colours tinted by the sunset light, these people sideways of their barely visible hulls; unfortunately I could not take a picture but what a sight, the image is still vivid.Looking at it, I suspect that while it is a working boat type, they likely race them, bit like the open heavily canvassed open boats in the carib.
Edit. Just found some more recent images on the internet (not mine), indeed they race, crew is four (one is for scooping water
