Is there any particular reason why we are not talking about Tony Curphey?

I hope that we may look forward to an article. I’d like to benefit from some of Mr Curphey’s expertise. That was a quick circumnavigation with no fuss.

I went to his excellent talk, and looked at his boat and spoke to him, and I feel that alone justified the boat show ticket.

I was wrong; he's circumnavigated five times.

Some things I learned:

Use of a series drogue and how to retrieve it
Submarine hatch in companionway with counterweight.

Kept my boat in the yard where he worked on his boat,he leant me his bike, nice bloke, competent and very experienced
Sure. I have only know him for a year as I was born in NZ and adopted out. He has been looking for me ever since. Its a beautiful love story between him and my late mother which I'm writing about presently. I did my DNA last year and found his son Ian, my half brother. Many tears. We chat via Whatsapp regularly and we're coming over to the UK to meet him and my half brothers next year. He seems very humble, is quite shy and extremely polite. He detests fame and would rather not be in the limelight. He is well spoken and beautifully inclusive as I'm biologically non binary. I have an incomplete y chromosome, making me inately feminine despite all attempts not to be. This is a gene anomaly which runs through my mothers family line. I've been using neutral language to describe myself since the mid eighties before we knew what non binary was, so it's not a new thing. This no hesitation inclusion from Tony, as soon as we started chatting, tells me he is a very intelligent man despite not doing well in his school years, something we also have in common. He prefers to be alone at sea despite being perfectly capable of socialising. The solitude seems to work well for him. Probably the most gorgeous thing is his absolute passion for the sea, something all single handed sailors seem to have in common. He is also famous in NZ for refusing to use emergency services to be rescued when a whale took out his rudder skeg. His wife who was relatively nearby (150km) towed him into Nelson for repairs.
He had his own trucking business in his younger years and drove throughout europe, sometimes with his sons as passengers. He has written about this.
We are actually very similar people so the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I also sail and drive trucks despite never knowing of him. No records were kept of his existance and my birth mother died when I was two. I'm a national and Australasian dinghy champ and international helmsperson. I was a sailmaker in my twenties and have sailed everything from p class to maxi boats. I also had three seasons in 18 foot skiffs in Sydney harbour. I currently live in Wellington NZ and I'm the lost love child of Tony Curphey and his lost love Marlene Delahunt.

Wonderful story Ellie D. Stay in touch about when you are coming over; it would be good to arrange a YBW lunch for you all, and few other sailing bods. We haven't had one for ages.

Yes of course, that sounds fun. Tony is getting ready to put to sea so we will have to see when and where he lands.

What an amazing story, I'm so glad you've managed to reconnect.

I live in Emsworth (round the corner from Thornam Marina where he keeps his boat). One of my friends went out specially to meet him at the entrance to Chichester Harbour on his return from his last trip.

Thanks, yes it's been an emotional journey. I've realised I posted my long reply to the wrong person, but I'm slowly getting the hang of this platform. I'm excited to meet him and the extended family I never knew I had. He told me he was in Chichester harbour but not specifically where so thanks. Are the foiling Americas cup boats anywhere near your harbour? We lived in the viaduct harbour during the last Americas cup and had a grandstand view of proceedings. Wish I was younger to be on the team.

Hi, I wrote last year about coming over to meet my birth father Tony Curphey. We will be in Chichester harbour on the 12th of October and in the area to meet family members for around a week. Very exciting. Attached is a story I wrote about Tony.
Happy sailing.
