Is there any sensible way that sternglands could be replaced with something more efficient?

A saily pal has a "deep water seal" (?) and says all he finds in his bilge is dust whilst I sometimes need to don a wetsuit to check mine!

Thanks

Nick

Deep Sea Seal: see here - need to scroll down: There have been mixed reviews on them on the forums over the years, as there seem to have been some failures.

Ooooo.....am I a sailly pal now then? /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

The unit on my boat is a Volvo fitted thingy and I'm supposed to 'burp' it and inject some grease round the inboard end when the boat is put back in the water after a lift out. I'm ashamed to say I know little more than that about it and must do some boning up. There is a water lubricating arrangement that feeds water frrom the raw water intake to the seal itself.
The bilges are bone dry though with not a drop of water to be seen.

Found this site on the web <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.boatsontheweb.com/> Website, Photo Gallery, Chat Room, Burgees

Deep Sea Seal - apparently some of the early ones failed, which was claimed to be due to incorrect assembly/'bleeding after relaunch' - but now have a 'safety clamp' fitted. Lots of people love them though. Another is the Volvo seal which is cheaper but not available in my combination of Stern Tube & Shaft Diameter.
I have investigated both the Deep Sea Seal and the PSS seal - I think the PSS seal is better engineered but I don't have enough space between my stern tube and drive flange - so I intend to fit the Deep Sea Seal this winter.

Why not replace the packing, thats £8 instead of £200-300 X 2 for Deep Sea Seals.

Its fairly simple job but better done when the boats out of the water although I have seen it done when in as well.

PLUS!!!!!

In an emergency, if you have the old stuffing box, you can stuff whatever is handy in there to stop the boat sinking eg Rags, Towels.

If the Deep Sea Seal goes (and they dont last forever despite the hype), you sink.

How many mechanical devices with moving parts do YOU know that last forever?

If you are in the middle of the channel and it starts to leak (and believe it or not some have done), how will you fix it?

If the engine fails, you carry spares, you cant fit a spare Deep Sea.

But you can stuff rags into a stuffing box to get you home.

Simple survival tactics really.

Well, it was cheaper about a couple of years ago - I was quoted about £75 for the Volvo and about £120 for the Deep Sea Seal - unfortunately they don't make any with Imperial sizes!
AND the exhaust elbow for the 2020 was cheaper than the Perkins Perama equivalent!(the base engine is the same)

Failure of shaft lip seals - backups

Hang on! Decent lip seal installations include a SECOND spare seal already threaded on the shaft, so if the first one fails you cut it off and put the new one into action, all without having to decouple the shaft etc
