Is the freedom (and fun) of sailing in the UK a thing of the past

Being the one 'just coming back to sailing', I really do wonder if all this safety gear and electronic gizmos are really required by some regulation or practical application.
For instance, can you get into a marina without using vhf or a mobile phone?
In practical terms, is it no longer the 'done thing' to set off without them all?
If I did so, would I be classed as the same sort of person who attempts Ben Nevis in plimsoles and a boble hat?
And what happened to the Breton cap and pink trousers yottie uniform.
Hi to all those we met in Haslar a couple of weekends ago. We were the ones in the very loud hawian shirts.

No, nothing says you have to use gismos. There is no reason to radi ahead or phone, just turn up, normally you'll get in by doing just that!

Nought wrong with just going sailing!
I sailed with a guy in Antigua, we had the choice, do you wan the outboard on the boat mon? Na, lets just do it. No lifejackets no liferaft, no comms no charts!!

Fantastic fun..

Another thought that just occured to me;
As a kid, I used to race dinghies at Portsmouth Sailing Club. We used the old Royal Alberet as a stating post with the line extending a mile off shore. The flags were the size of bedsheets on a pole the size of a ships mast and we had a cannon for sound signals.
I joined the local pond sailing club here and was amazed, and amused, to find that the mast is 6 foot tall on wheels, the flags the size of pocket handcerchiefs and the cannon replaced by a bell.
Ho hum, the pond is only 3/4 mile long and a hundred yards wide. It's great for teaching the kids but why do we have certain pipe smoking older members wandering around in breton cap and yellow wellies talking about seamanship? Shouldn't that be 'pondsmanship'?
Each to their own, I suppose.

Each to their own,

Hello Duncan, welcome back into the world of sailing.

Re getting into marinas without VHF/Phone .You can in most cases but may find it frustrating not knowing what time locks will open etc in other places.where I sail from in cardiff. The barrage locks only open if requested so you would have to wait for another boat to arrive.OK on a busy weekend but out of season late at night you could wait all night!

You can pick up a redundant non DSC set for very little money that will give you contact witrh marinas let you get the weather forecasts and in emergency contact the coast Guards.

like you I try to keep things simple but taken too far this will just cause inconvenience to yourself.

Pics above taken on saturday coming in on our own so we would have had to wait out without VHF/Phone

Just join RNSA. IMHO rank is irrelevant in sailing especially once you retire, although there are a few around who may think otherwise. Once you have joined, you will need to apply for the appropriate warrant - which only covers your boat when you are onboard.

Thanks for the advise Talbot .Im not really thinking of joining I was just interested in who is allowed to wear the blue ensign.

\"Where the oysters are...\"

That prompted two thoughts in rapid sucession..

First, that the average denizen of the Orwell would think that you meant Fox's Marina ("where the Oysters are!") and second that you can get very good Natives at Walton-on-Naze, cheaper than further South.

Started sailing in West Mersea, migrated to Walton and eventually to the Deben.
