"The old river in its broad reach rested unruffled at the decline of day, after ages of good service done to the race that peopled its banks, spread out in the tranquil dignity of a waterway leading to the uttermost ends of the earth."
the River Thames from
The Heart of Darkness
Joseph Conrad
Probably still that number wandering around London homeless now, so no change there then. When it was built by Telford 11000 people were made homeless.
We are attempting the record for the slowest, most laid back & most easily distracted UK circumnavigation - Burnham on Crouch tomorrow - RSPB reserve on Wallsea island I see.Love or hate London, it's great to have a cruising report from someone who is out there doing it and clearly enjoying it!
Of course, tastes vary! But to me, the whole point of sailing is to get away from civilization...It's a great facility, it puts Glasgow to shame, another city that was co-dependant on its river, but now seems to actively discourage any use at all, other than add another thousand blocks of flats, to make the foreign private equity firm that 'owns' the river more money. I believe the council 'run' a birdshit covered pontoon that you can book by 'applying in writing to use it no less than 2 weeks in advance', as long as you don't have a mast. Cherish your city centre marinas.
Ive been in the church where Columbus took a final mass with his crew before evading the wrath of the Governor of Gomera ( girls love sailors) and nipping off to ravage the Americas.
And sat in the seat in The Pub, Valetta, where Oliver Reed had his heart attack.
And the Wardroom in Nelsons Dockyard, Antigua where Nelson did nelsonian stuff.
??
I believe that there is plenty of uncivilised behaviour available in London!Of course, tastes vary! But to me, the whole point of sailing is to get away from civilization...
LOLThe free hair straighteners have returned to the men's toilets at Portavadie. Beat that, St Kats.
Is that in Tahiti? ?Been to all those as well!
Bet you've not been in Discomera
"Though every prospect pleases, and only man is vile" (Reginald Heber).I believe that there is plenty of uncivilised behaviour available in London!
And if anyone knew the sort of thing being done at the uttermost ends of the earth, it was Conrad. OK, Belgian had the Congo, but Britain's noble nautical history is pretty horrible when you look into it."The old river in its broad reach rested unruffled at the decline of day, after ages of good service done to the race that peopled its banks, spread out in the tranquil dignity of a waterway leading to the uttermost ends of the earth."

The owners benefited, first from renting insanitary slums, then from having them torn down. What happened to those unfortunate enough to live in those slums?
