"The old river in its broad reach rested unruffled at the decline of day, after ages of good service done to the race that peopled its banks, spread out in the tranquil dignity of a waterway leading to the uttermost ends of the earth."
the River Thames from
The Heart of Darkness
Joseph Conrad

Though of course Marlow's '“And this also has been one of the dark places of the earth” begins an evocation of the Thames as something much less pleasant: '... the very end of the world, a sea the colour of lead, a sky the colour of smoke ...'.

It's a great facility, it puts Glasgow to shame, another city that was co-dependant on its river, but now seems to actively discourage any use at all, other than add another thousand blocks of flats, to make the foreign private equity firm that 'owns' the river more money. I believe the council 'run' a birdshit covered pontoon that you can book by 'applying in writing to use it no less than 2 weeks in advance', as long as you don't have a mast. Cherish your city centre marinas.

Of course, tastes vary! But to me, the whole point of sailing is to get away from civilization...

Ive been in the church where Columbus took a final mass with his crew before evading the wrath of the Governor of Gomera ( girls love sailors) and nipping off to ravage the Americas.

And sat in the seat in The Pub, Valetta, where Oliver Reed had his heart attack.

And the Wardroom in Nelsons Dockyard, Antigua where Nelson did nelsonian stuff.

??

Been to all those as well!

Bet you've not been in Discomera

I believe that there is plenty of uncivilised behaviour available in London!
"Though every prospect pleases, and only man is vile" (Reginald Heber).

My late first wife was brought up in Dulwich, but her grandmother lived in Brixton and she went to school in Peckham. Dulwich is very pleasant, but I took her advice about deliberately not seeing things in Brixton! Paying too much attention to some things could be bad for your health ...

And if anyone knew the sort of thing being done at the uttermost ends of the earth, it was Conrad. OK, Belgian had the Congo, but Britain's noble nautical history is pretty horrible when you look into it.

Having lived most of my adult life in London and a significant part of that in wapping I do love this city but St. Kats doesn't really seem like much of an exotic holiday (although I understand why it would be to visitors).

Does plymouth's Sutton Harbour rival it for a luxurious berth in the middle of a city soaked in nautical history?

RSPB reserve on Wallsea island I see.

For birdlife in the centre of town, a slightly better berth might have been South Dock. Probably indicative of the fact that my rock and roll years are behind me but I'm particularly excited by the recently hatched great crested grebe chicks on the adjacent greenland dock.

Used to be La Gomera San Sebastion's only disco, had the misfortune to get dragged in once.
Did they have to drag you out too? ?

You are right though, not done that. However, all things going to plan, will be in San Sebastián on Sunday. I know the square quite well. Will be in somewhere there for footy final.......??

The owners benefited, first from renting insanitary slums, then from having them torn down. What happened to those unfortunate enough to live in those slums?

In the early days of slum clearances, they simply got pushed into the remaining slums thus causing even more overcrowding and distress

Then somebody came up with the brilliant idea of tower blocks and we all know, with the benefit of hindsight, worked really well
