Re: Is Scuttlebutt the world\'s best yacht club?

It's certainly seems that Scuttlebutt has that hearty group of regulars around the bar, whose backs are always turned to you and are constantly laughing at increasingly obscure in-jokes. They're pleasant enough when cornered one-on-one, but they don't want you in their magic circle. They've chewed all the old topics to death, but they forget that for newcomers to the club, it's all new.
They seem to think the club's run for them, and perhaps they're right.

It's great when they share their wisdom and experience, but not so good when the clique takes over.

And that Philip...

...just about describes EVERY Yacht Club/Sailing Club around! Cliques form wherever you are, and eventually a group of 'newbies' will get together and form their own clique that will really p**s off the established members as none of them will know what on earth is going on.

Hey that sounds a bit like our present government doesn't it???!!!

Re: Is Scuttlebutt the world\'s best yacht club?

Not sure you're right about this - my impression is that you have to be able to laugh at yourself and be reasonably thick-skinned to enjoy 'the club'. If you take yourself too seriously then you'll be shot down in flames, and you'd better be able to give as well as take the stick.

Most of the 'offensive' banter is between people who have met and can therefore take the mickey with more impunity. Bit like real life.

In between the banter there's lots of good debate and even some useful advice.

Philip, come over here and let me buy you a pint.

We're not like that really, and sorry if it appears that way. We had many Scuttlebutt virgins on the Cherbourg cruise and I doubt if they felt cliqued out. Now, what did you want to ask?

Let's not forget the obvious advantage, no-one has to nominate you, and you don't have to search round for a seconder.

I don't think I'd second myself actually - lazy no good b*****d!

Motion to dismiss me from the club!
