Does Sailing have to be a lifestyle?

To me it is just something I do, if I didn't have a yacht I would have a fishing boat... Unlikely I would go for a mobo cruiser, but that is personal choice.

On the forum we will be told if something is coming on television about sailing, or even a program that contains a passing mention of something nautical. I generally avoid these, it is not a spectator sport IMO and is as dull as watching golf (snigger).

Then there is music on board threads, most it seems start listing music that has any reference to the sea or was used in a film about the sea or even was once used as a soundtrack to a clip of water somewhere... Do you chaps really need to feel at sea when you are at sea, rather bizarre.

When out and about I rarely if ever talk about owning a boat, there is far more to life, it is just a boat. I have recently cancelled subs on PBO as I am scared of turning into a boat-bore, plus I get bored reading about boats.

I have to own a boat, I use my boat... If we own a boat, is it really necessary to take on the whole stripy jumper, send to sleep persona?

This is not a rant as I watch from the sidelines with a wry smile. There surely is more to life, isn't there?

The boat/sailing is (much) more than a hobby (to me).

It's in me, I'd be lost without it - in a way sailing defines me.
It's a drug - addictive and bloody expensive
It's a way of life. You are either a sailor or not - always.
Sailing is something you live - not something to do in the week-end.

But, that may just be me :o

I had to look up "hobby" to see how to answer the question. According to Chambers' it's; hobby1 noun (hobbies) an activity or occupation carried out in one's spare time for amusement or relaxation.

By that definition I don't think it is a hobby so much as what Guapa says, as well as something that binds me to my family and friends.

You're right, I should have made it;

It's not just you, but me too....which is scary cos I'm agreeing with you:confused:

For me sailing is all of the above, and so is photography.....And they are both my job, and I'm passionate about all three

The fact my girlfriend is passionate about sailing is the icing on the cake for me. I have the girlfriend, the boat and the job of my dreams

I'm a happy man:cool:

Snooks, I can beat that
I live on a house overlooking a lock in the Crinan Canal, yachts from all over Europe passing within 30' of our windows every day, beyond are the moorings on Loch Gilp then Loch Fyne and the mountains of Arran. Even in gale conditions Loch Fyne is sailable as far as Loch Ranza, the Kyles of Buter or Inveraray. When I have nothing else to do I have a sideline helping boats through the canal for beer money, a nice 4hr. workout. I keep a yacht in the canal, in early spring and late autumn it as the bottom of the garden, very handy for maintenance, so I use my wheelbarrow to move heavy gear like sails aboard, out on Loch Fyne In 20 mins. Come May the boat goes to her permanent summer berth less than an hour away by bike along the level towpath near Crinan. From there I can be on Gigha, Mull, Colonsay or Coll in a few hours.
I have the boat I always wanted and retired now, all the time to use it and to choose the weather and my wife is a whiskey afficionado who loves to visit island the malt distilleries.
The only downside to this idyll is the way the passage of time has been accelerating, is ther no way to slow it down a bit.

For some, of course, its what pays the bills. One can feel somewhat less than poetic about the whole deal when its lashing with rain, half your crew are vomming all over the place (why do big waves never quite wash it all off?) and you are wondering quite what is going to break next whilst getting a pitiful wage......

......and then the sun comes out, engine goes off and the welcoming cast of the underwater ballet begin to frolic around the bow..........

Pay is still **** though!!! And that was the first time I've ever typed 'frolic'!!!

I imagine I am fairly typical. I was taken sailing for the first time at the age of 17. One short trip from the Hamble to Cowes and back, and I have never wanted to spend my spare time (or even working time or family time) doing anything else since. There are so many different facets to sailing, and such a wide range of skills, that nothing else comes close. Is it a hobby? It is far beyond that.

Hobby?

If you are bored, have a look at my 'hobby' at www.mplr.co.uk

Sailing is so much more than this. I think about it before I go to sleep, when I get up, while at work (that activity that pays for sailing). I own a very old, very small bilge keeler, but am in love with it.

Sailing is more of an addiction than a hobby in my case.

Roll on the weekend!

My hobby is surgery...

.... and they pay me for it (another 1yr 41 days) then goinig sailing all day

(typo: for goinig (sounds like good idea) read going (and learning japanese))

That looks brilliant, but the site doesn't tell me where you are, where is this, is it open to us public irks?

p.s. you should have said you were coming to porthmadog, we'd have invited you aboard.

I have the boat of my dreams, a jealous wife, and enough money to keep them both going for another 7-10 years.

I shouldn't complain, but, oh! the stress of balancing the demands of house maintenance, wife maintenance and boat maintenance. It's enough to drive one to drink. (Hic!)

Hobby or Lifestyle?

Don't think it is either! as previous poster mentioned...It's Addictive!...was a time in the dim pre-history of my youth when I played golf to a reasonable handicap (3)...then I went sailing!!...within the year had sold the clubs to finance the first little boat....40+ years on, still sailing....and so do the children & the grand children....one of the few pastimes that can actually involve all the family.....but its not a lifestyle! its a way of life!

For me "it's just a boat" - enjoyable but not particularly special. Maybe to do with having grown up with boats?

Could be that at some point a boat will be used as a tool to voyage for extended periods to foreign sun kissed shores, or maybe not - I have done the extended period thing to foreign sun kissed shores many times already - by 747 :) - and whilst that is also enjoyable not everything it's cracked up to be either. I can't see adding a boat would make a great difference...........but at least I am not saving up me pennies to a retirement afloat to find that one out

"it's only a boat" is probably not the greatest of straplines for an industry :D
