"'cos I ain't waiting in pain for several months for the NHS!!"

Some years ago (at least 15) my sister suffered terrible back pains, so much so that the only way she could sleep was to curl up into a ball on her knees, on the floor./forums/images/icons/frown.gif

Having private medical cover, over the following year she was seen by a handful of different private Orthopeadic/Chiropractors "consultants" with no improvement.

Two visits to the local NHS hospital to see the duty Chiropractor and her problems had almost immediately gone./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

She is now (and has been since) 100% fit.

Coincidence? Maybe.....

I'm not really knocking the quality of the NHS - They looked after Mrs Nicho brilliantly last year when she was taken ill and was rushed as a with full emergency, blue lights and the lot. From top to bottom, the staff and medical care was superb over the ensuing 3 weeks.

The problem is the waiting times - for non emergencies (such as I am though I might argue with that right now!), the waiting time to see this consultant is 10 weeks. I cannot wait that long. Going private the guy is seeing me in 3 days!

Mike, you have my every sympathy, I know how frustrating it is - and I've only suffered today!

Today, we were all packed and ready to travel to St Malo to join the boat (left there last weekend) for three weeks holiday. This morning, bent down to pick up one of the bags. Ouch!! back went & I ended up on the floor in much pain! Lay there all day (7 hours total) unable to move - let alone get up. Doc arrived about 6pm & prescribed some painkillers etc. Have just managed to get up and sit on a chair. Needless to say, boat travel not taken, bags still packed, holiday not started and not likely to until next week - assuming my back improves.

I'm frustrated at only a few days (hopefully) delay. I can fully understand how you must feel after several weeks...... I just hope things will start moving and improve for you quickly.

Regards
David

Oh God David, that is desperately bad luck - hopefully it will be fixed asap. I think the problem is we were designed to be on all fours and not upright. Don't know what painkillers you were prescribed, but I have a real problem of (believe it or not) mild addiction to codeine after taking the tablets for some 4/5 weeks. Initially it was pure codeine, but latterly Co-codomol,(though the pain has largely subsided, I'm left with trapped nerves, a numb leg and withering muscles). It is a very strange and uncomfortable feeling, a mild form of "cold turkey", and whilst I'm very tired, I am hyper and cannot sleep. I've spent several nights pacing round the house (even watched John Kerry's speech at 03.00 this morning!!). Evidently, I should have gradually reduced the dosage rather than stop suddenly. If you are given codeine, make sure you take a decent laxative at the same time - I cannot tell you how it bungs up the holding tank!!

I'm off to see the Consultant on Monday to see what can be done. Hopefully yours will clear up a lot quicker than mine. I need to be better in 5 weeks 'cos we've hired a motor cruiser on the Shannon for 10 days. Perhaps I'll just steer, and leave the hard work to the motley crew (SHMBO + two friends).

Best of luck

Mike

Alternatively try late night live Big Brother. Guaranteed to drive you to sleep or insanity.

Anybody who watches BB at any time is already insane and completely beyond help!

(I can say that just now as SWMBO is out shopping)

Re: Late night TV

It is very frustrating - having cancelled our Sky subscription last year for lack of use, I now find there is absolutely nothing worth watching in the early hours on terrestial TV. I have even resorted to playing back our own boat videos!

My misery has today been compounded on receipt a text from two of our marina neighbours/friends who are rafted together in Jersey, no doubt in the glorious sunshine that we currently have.

Off to see a Consultant Orthopaedic chappie on Monday - just the start, but this HAS to get sorted!

Bah!!

My goodness! Such doom and gloom and universal misconception. Back pain is not a problem and just in case it didn’t register I will say it again – Back pain is not a problem. It is generally very easily sorted. The main problem is that the normal range treatments are focused on treating the symptoms rather than sorting the cause. If your boat was leaking you wouldn’t just keep bailing – you would sort the hole where the water was coming in.
If you really wish to do something about it, then take a look here.

Sorry! My Hyperlink didn't work so I'll repeat myself.

Thanks Gus. I see from your Bio that you are in the profession!! I've been visiting my regular chiro for many years, and he has always sorted out the problem. Trouble is, this time it's different, not the usual back pain, but more like trapped nerves (sciatica type of thing), and he doesn't seem to be able to cure it for once.

I've been referred to a Consultant Orthopaedic chappie tomorrow am, who will hopefully be able to shed more light on the problem

Re: Brazen claims

I assume this miracle cure is based on distracting the patient with humour?

Let me see if I have got you right, a widespread affliction that consumes major NHS resources and costs employers £10's of millions can be "generally very easily sorted".

I note that this claim is made by a quack who is so successful he has to subsidise his web site with general banner ads. The web site reads like a promotion for a pyramid selling scam.

Update

Yep, looks like it could be over!! Saw consultant yesterday, and he confirmed a slipped disc - MRI scan tomorrow so that he can see how serious it is and decide best course of action. Hopefully a physio cure, not surgery - I've never been in hospital, and a real coward to boot when it comes to someone carving me up!!

I hope that we can take the boat out for the odd day sail in the not too distant future, with me at the helm, and with a couple of mates to assist SHMBO with the sheets, lines, halyards etc etc. The alternative is to simply motor everywhere for a while!! It appears there will be no heavy stuff for me for some months.

Boy, this is really pissing me off, my frustration intensified by the fact that I've been contacted by three "friends" this week telling me how they are enjoying the delights of St Malo, Jersey and Dartmouth respectively. Have they no feelings whatsoever??

To those going, have a great time in Cherbourg - I'll be thinking of you and not feeling a jot sorry for any sore heads!!

Cheers all

Perhaps Not!!

Just been to see the MRI scan results with the Consultant, and it's not as bad as feared. There's evidence of some degeneration of the discs due to wear and tear, but nothing exceptional for someone of my age (and motorsport background). The real problem is a swollen and inflamed nerve trapped between the two vertabrae, The suspicion being that it was caused by over aggressive manipulation!! (NOT diving off the wardrobe, Andyhythe) and that it should, in time gradually sort itself out. If however the slow improvment 'plateaus', then it will be a "sharp knife job" in his words, though that decision would be several weeks away.

I was surprised to hear that even if the nerve was released today, then it would be at least another 6 months before it was restored to full effeciency!.

Sorry if this is boring to you chaps, but I'm chuffed to bits!! Off to the boat next Sunday for the first time in weeks, though I still have to be very careful not to aggrevate the situation.

I can't wait!!

Cheers

Mike

Hi there, every sympathy with you, your season may be over, but with a few adjustments to your life style, everything can be normal. I had two discs removed some 7 years ago, but less than 4 weeks after operation, I competed in a Canoe slalom event, which I won, (caused the problem in the first place). I still snow ski, climb, windsurf and sail, play football with my kids, but I had to learn to stand and walk and move Properly. No more twisting and bending down, no more lounging on the sofa, lots of stretching exercises and most important, keeping all the muscles in my back and stomach in good shape. A few setbacks over the years, but touch wood, lifes a breeze compared to the agony pre operation.
Get loads of info and see what's best for you, Ian Botham had a disc removed and his spine fused, and still carried on playing cricket.

Get comfortable soon and I wish you well with what the future has instore for you.

All the best Piglets Dream
