Is my Mariner Ancient?

I have just purchased a secondhand (perhaps that should be 22nd hand) two stroke Mariner 28 HP short shaft outboard. I believe it to be 30-40years old. Can anyone tell me its year of manufacture from the serial number which is .... Mariner 28 6648 156638.

The "1" could possibly be a "5" or an "S" but I'm fairly sure its a "1".

I think I'd assume that the first part is 664B and then ignore the B but you do need to decipher the 1 or whatever at the start of the second half

It's difficult to make out that digit as it has been damaged and partially obliterated. It looks like a "1" but I thought that it might be a "S" for short shaft.
