Is it worth the brain-strain?

Let me begin by admitting that right now I am pissed. Yep, several too many in celebration of passing my YM quiz. My wallet is several buffalo's lighter.

Anyway, is having a YM all that it's cracked up to be?

I ask because there is a YM living on his boat just one pontoon away and there is feck-all chance that I would let him try park my boat. There is feck-all chance that I would let him fill my water tanks. There is feck-all chance that I would let him stand a two hour watch at night. There is feck-all chance that I would let him light the stove for a quick fry-up of bacon 'n egg sarnies... This right-handed bloke has 10 left thumbs and he admits that, luckily for him, his examiner failed to ask him to tie any knots. So what does having a YM really prove?

I had a Dazed Kipper Theory instructor (who apparently was also YM prac instructor) that I wouldn't even want to lend my tender too ... he was slow, out of date and IMO dangerous ... he let people pass the DK Theory who couldn't even tell you when high tide was!
When it came to doing the YM/CS Theory we found another school ... and the new guy was far better, even if he didn't like AWBs and said they're too tippy ... just because his MAB was so undercanvassed he could hold full sail in a F8! ...

Anyway - to answer your question ... you can wave all the qualifications you like, but until I've actually seen you do what you say you can do you'll still be a muppet! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Oh no... didn't think he was a tosser .. surely he's beyond that, how else would he pass his Young Mistress exam?!

Now, which muppet could Stingo be?

And a Seth Afrikan YM

drinks like a fish and fights like a whore who ain't been paid

And I'll stand him a case of Castle in December

Congrats Joe

So would it mean I would be a muppet if I told you I had passed my YM some time ago ? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
If so , which one ?
Careful now /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have been banging this drum for years. I signed up for a YM course at Southampton Tech. back in about 77 or 8 and the theory exercises were just so dumb I quit. I already had a couple of K miles under the keel and predicted that the more folks that took the exams the sooner it would be that having this useless bit of paper would become a requirment for all sorts of reasons. Insurance, chartering etc etc. SWMBO stuck with it, gawd bless her, but she couldn't plan a passage or navigate to save her life. Not bad on the helm but sail trim remains a mystery for her to this day. Gotta go, she just came back in. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Like all exam type qualifications it is only a start and the real knowledge comes with experience which you already have. You normally only get the paper after passing the exam which it seems most controlling authorities want to see. This in most cases does not show how experience you are and it is experience which really counts in any field.

Dont know about RYA but SAS do require a minimum number of logged sea miles on watch to get full SAS YM but this is not recognized in the rest of the world as RYA is not recognized in the US or ASA recognized in the UK.

seeing as Stingo has crossed the Atlantic twice, including once single handed, do you really think he's a muppet? a tosser, maybe, but no muppet, IMHO.

Single handed crossings of any ocean do not impress me after I had the great pleasure of sailing for a day with the lovely Claire Francis. I asked her if she had a YM certificate and her reply was quite an eye opener. She said that she did not think she would pass as all her single handed races had started by being towed from a marina berth to the start line, pointing the yacht at New York and being towed to another marina berth after crossing the finish. She had no idea of things like Colregs, Pilotage, working the tide, planning such things as stores and rations, crew management and so on.

Don't matter if you've passed your YM or not ... as far as my boat is concerned - everyone is a muppet until I (or someone I trust) see that they're not.

I've only got as far as YM/CS theory, but experience can count for a lot more than qualifications!

As for Stingo - he's welcome on my boat /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well, when I first started sailing I did the old Coastal Skipper 1 & 2 as was (day and night for you youngsters). So far, amongst other places, it got me from Guernsey to the Caribbean via the 'usual route'. I'm off again shortly and took the RYA Astro theory, full of intentions to 'do' the YM practical then upgrade to the Ocean Master. My enthusiasm has wained however and I'll probably go as I am. I don't think that having a YM makes you a good sailor, it's experience that does that. Interestingly, my insurance company seems to 'lump' YM and Coastal Skipper together.

If it was a brain strain, then it must have been worth it!

...there is a YM living on his boat just one pontoon away....

If he has let slip in casual conversation that he 'is a YM', then he is also a muppet.

Still, well done, just make sure you don't go telling lots of people about your achievements......ah..... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Depends on why you do it. Me I've done CS Prac and YM theory having moved from dinghies only 5 years back and wanting to check I was doing the right sort of things.

When doing the CS there was a YM candidate who did his exam one day in the week, who despite a log full of miles (7500) could not have sailed his way out of a wet paper bag, had never hada spinny up, knew sod all about sail trim... He was interested in getting the ticket...

I'm enjoying the YM theory bit having had a high disregard fro RYA quals ever since they came out. But, that is on the basis of those who think RYA Level 5 DInghy or YM is the absolute be all and end all
