I have heard that so little thought goes into some boat designs that, for example, Fairline build their boats around fixtures such as a Washing machine in the utility room - which is then impossible to remove because the doors are not wide enough and their is no hatch - is this true?

Does anyone know of more examples of basic items of equipment being boxed in witthout any regard for future maintainance?

Remarkable as it may sound , our flats had most of its major fitments put in through windows and roof space...and the same issue arises.

Could even be worth more than some fairlines given it's in London. Only way for new header tanks was roof remodelling.

Smaller production boats like fairlines are built in this order:

1, mould hull;
2 fit bulkheads;
3 fit engines, wiring, plumbing, washing m/c, exhausts, generators, and as much as possible kit;
4 attach deck and join at gunwhale.
5 Soft furniture

So there must be quite a lot that is difficult to remove once the deck is glued on. I guess the difficulty in replacing the washing machine if it busts is offset by cheaper boat, due to by more efficient production (or should be)?

Larger boats from the usual Italian yards have the hull/deck joined together first (usually at a subcontract moulding shop someplace else than the fit out shop) then everything else including engines is fitted afterwards, and therefore ought to be easily removeable

All AFAIK and IMHO

I really think its a bit much if having spent over£500k on a boat, you cannot even replace a broken washing machine. To me, its not the washing machine so much as the attitude it conveys - ie a very short term one.

I think most boats are sold on form and then functionality in that order.

What I would like to see on this forum is a manufacturing rep present themselves to the forum one a month for questions/answer sessions.

they certainly monitor the board carefully, sweeping the posts for any mention of their name. I suppose we will have to be a bit more pleasant about them, and not mention the rubbish bits.

Yup could'nt get my old electric/gas fridge out of either of the three doors, had to remove one of the front main cabin windows and hoist it up through. Looks like it would require the same for the cooker.

I once heard of a guy who built a boat in a shed in his garden then had to knock the front out of the shed cos the boat wouldn't fit through the door.

My Renault Espace was built around the bonnet release mechanism. When the cable snaps (after being used five times) the entire car has to be disassembled...something that takes 974 hours @ £60 an hour (assuming, of course, that you can book it in at the dealer's some time in the next 7 months).
