Is it normal for fuel stations to display prices which includes a split of 60/40?

Whilst I agree with JFM, I to have been confused at times and told by at least one marina. The price is 95p thats it. (Some time ago)

Trying to explain to them that it was not their perogative to fix the price, fell on deaf ears. The only price they should be fixing is the Red price. Umm 68P?? the rest is up to me.
 
I always love it when someone mentions the word "contract" on an Internet forum. All of a sudden the place erupts into a frenzy of would be high court lawyers trying desperately to fight their corner. Grey wigs get thrown to the floor in the melay and Latin words get quoted, mis-quoted and re-quoted with gay abandon.

The dude made a mistake, you paid the advertised price and luckily had the means to cover it upon your person.

You do raise a very valid point though. When the whole diesel thing first arrived on the scene I remember pulling into somewhere which advertised the tax free price. I think I may have mentioned it on here at the time. I was then a bit shocked when I had to find more money for my 60/40 tax.

Prices should definitely be clearly marked. Possibly 3 standard prices ( which seems to be the way the decent places have gone ). Tax free, 60/40 and full fat 100 tax. That way there is no confusion.

In the meantime we all know roughly what a litre of road derv costs so 100% duty fuel is going to be there or there abouts ( possibly a bit more because it's got the word marine in the title :)

We all know the cost of road derv so if you're paying less than that you know it will be tax free or 60/40. You were never going to pay £1 a litre for full fat diesel on the water.

To add, I had a case last year where I filled up within the family marina , as it were, and then argued that the price cannot have been with the split(or was it the at cost, discount?). Anyway, I wasnt going to argue all day about it.
When I returned to my home marina, they said they had been ringing me all day on the phone, as I was indeed right, and they made a mistake.
So, some companies seem happy to admit and cough up.
 
Yes - I agree three prices. Then there is the 'passing trade' and berthholders discounts to apply

Last couple of occasions I have refuelled the amount taken in litres is manually calculated at the appropriate price the pump price was always the high 'passing trade' 60/40 price
 
I have seen boards up at pumps showing 50%, 60% and 70% rates, it may not make it any easier to work out if you feel you should be claiming 40% but at least it is obvious that discount has already been applied.

I am with the OP on this in that the discount is not automatic and as such should not be quoted unless it is clearly displayed at what percentage it has been calculated.

Or you can just do what I do and buy petrol, no confusion there other than why it is not discounted when used for the same purpose.

All the marinas display the after 60/40 price including at my club pontoon which has a club members only pump.
Much prefer an easy how much will it cost me figure on the pump without having to resort to calculator..

Sorry, being a raggie, I have only just found this thread and not read it all, word for word.

As an operator of a marine fuel outlet, I can speak from a position of some strength. The basic premise is that everybody has to pay the basic price of fuel, which is why it is advertised, and more importantly set on the pumps. However not everybody pays the same amount of duty. It can be anything between 0 and 100% of 49.3p/litre.

It is most definitely not up to the retailer to advise the customer to declare and pay a 60/40 split, it is the customer's decision which they have to be able to justify to HMRC if asked. So any outlet that is advertising this price is rather misleading the customers. If displaying anything other than the basic price, it should only be the full 100% duty price, not a discounted amount which the 60/40 split effectively is.

Trading Standards recognise that there is an issue with the display of pricing, and will not prescribe how it should be done, as long as the outlet displays how duty is applied to their pump price.

Edit: I just re-read the initial post - I'd say they are out of order for not displaying properly, and their staff dont really know what they are talking about. I had a similar problem myself, buying fuel elsewhere, and got on to Trading Standards about it.

Hampshire Trading Standards were interested for a while, I am still on first name terms with their man, and acknowledged there is a problem. However it is not a big enough issue for them to determine what the solution is. More complaints might force them to try a bit harder.

Spot on. Full respect to you for understnading the issue and operating your business so fairly and correctly. If only all the other retailers would do likewise.

I'll be buying fuel in the Solent in March next year; where is your outlet?
 
Ah, good stuff. I berthed there 1999-2002 with a phantom 42, B13 iirc. Funnily enough I was going to ask Mr M if I could park the new boat there for approximately all next March, pending its departure for the Med. Lymington would be a nice spot to be temporarily based, as you know
