A short time ago the following message was posted in mobo

As a feature in Motor Boat & Yachting, we're going to spend 24 hours in a liferaft. Would anyone like to join us?
We're doing it as part of Weymouth Lifeboat Week, and will have safety cover from the Weymouth Lifeboat crew and from the Coastal Sea School, which is based on Weymouth quay.
Subject to weather, we go in at 7pm on 31 July, and will be rescued by Weymouth Lifeboat in front of hundreds of cheering Lifeboat Week crowds on the beach, at 7pm on 1 August.
To ensure we live to see another day, but also experience some kind of swell, we'll be anchored in an appropriately safe but exposed part of Weymouth Bay, probably near the quay to begin with, then we're likely to be towed towards the east end of the beach for the final part.
We'll be in a Viking eight man raft, and so far we've got myself, Greg Copp (boat tester), and two local Weymouth RNLI beach lifeguards who are doing it to raise funds for Lifeboat Week.
The idea is to replicate, as much as we can, an abandon ship scenario, and simply see how we cope in a liferaft for that length of time, on the kind of rations and grab bag most skippers keep on board.

Muggins here is now trying to resolve a transport problem so he can join them /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif is this a localised type of insanity ? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That's alright then , got to keep the reputation
Seriously though , it's a chance to experience what most people have only heard about , so it's worth it I think

You used that excuse for not coming to Shotley last weekend when we all know it was really just avoiding the Morgana beer challenge /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

In a liferaft it will be liquid output not intake that becomes a problem with 10,000 spectators /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Apparently this time is to be no different /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif the only two volunteers came from the East coast and I was hoping to cadge a ride with the other nutter ( otherwise Louise would have been stuck without transport ) but the other volunteer has had to cancel as he's off to Spain /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif a likely story /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
So as of this morning I rejoin the fleet of the sensible and I'll try and remember what I learned in the RAF , volunteer for nuffink /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Excellent idea (but no I'm not wanting to join you!)

When I was in RN we did similar off Dartmouth in November! Dropped off (literally) from a launch in a survival suit, swim to raft, get in (now there is a challenge and we were fit & active youngsters!), sit there for several hours (only 5 or 6) before rescue.

As it wasn't particulary rough there was a rib deployed to run round us to give a bit of wash.

On another occasion had to jump off the flight deck of a frigate as an exercise evacuation. Never knew water could be so hard!

Volunteer - never - learnt that one now

Ooh arr , them new fangled smokey dirty smelly fings wot scares Ermintrude /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif have a look at the price of a ticket from Spalding to Weymouth , return , add in the cost of taxis and accomodation for the night once the excercise is over /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif just a bit more than I'm willing to fork out for what is essentially a good excercise to do , but will also be the subject of an article to help sell the magazine /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I think not /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Peter , yep , I think the old philosophy of never volunteer has to step in here /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
