Is GM IV so special that she needs pages in every edition of YM?

I am sorry you and others are bored with Gypsy Moth - its only one article of a few pages each month.

As the originator of the GM project and the prime mover for much of the campaign until the UKSA took her over, Paul has a lot to be proud of and has an understandable commitment to her. I am sure many readers feel part of the project through the magazine.

YM has achieved something quite remarkable in the restoration and relaunch of the boat and can't really be blamed for making something out of it.

YM is still has a major role to play in the programme, and will be part of the crew all the way round, so I am afraid you are destined to hear a fair bit more about her over the next couple of years. The YM crew will include members of staff, contributors and readers.

Now that the boat is sailing, and reports will be coming back from the open sea and stop-over ports, hopefully the articles will have more general appeal

No you're lot alone..

Or, in a Private Eye stylee:

'Old Boat is Restored and Sails Again'
by our correspondent Phil Space

James ... admirable project .....

But it does seem that the name and text crops up a lot ... and I only get to read odd mag snippets out here.

No-one decrys the effort and work gone into it .. I think that few could ever say they don't care for preserving history.

But there are other projects / restorations going on as well.

Personally I'm fascinated by the whole thing, so keep it coming.

In particular I would like to see some in-depth articles on how Chichester sailed the boat as his book doesn't go into much detail.

Fully agree with what YM have done, and applaud the initiative James. Its just getting somewhat repetitive to see it in every edition, plus PBO as well.

Whilst Chichester was a great man who I admired as a teenager, Gypsy Moth IV is only one boat amongst many that have achieved great things.

yes yes, i'd like to see loads more about GM IV , the famous boat restored with the sponsorship of UKSA, and its journey around the world. Especially the bit about the kind way that UKSA, the RYA-approved sailing school in Cowes, paid for it purely out of the kindness of their hearts, and a bit more background about UKSA too, if possible, including perhaps some reviews and plans of Cowes together with notes of how to find UKSA and some testimonials about UKSA or perhaps how some of the crew were from UKSA before joining the boat, and recap each month covering the restoration and launch and indeed the time when some nerk penpusher in Gibraltar said wow Gipsy Moth and the crew said yes, it was restored withthe help of UKSA, you know, which is a sailing school in cowes, as a matter of fact.

Don't forget the boat was actually restored at cost by Campers and Nicholson, along with sponsorship and support by many other suppliers.

The well known sailing school in Cowes, UKSA, have taken her over since the restoration. BTW, UKSA always have a 2-page advert in the back of the magazines, too.

Re: James ... admirable project .....

Yes I agree Nigel, there is a good restoration project on Hayling waiting to be completed....... I have to agree with the others that it does seem a non-stop barrage of mutual back-slapping and self advertisments. I do not decry the project as GM4 is a beautiful and historic yacht but there are other topics. Bet this thread doesn't get into readers letters!!

Do you think there might be some kind of conection there then?

I'm truly saddened to see such moaning about GMIV, I think it was a wonderful achievement by YM, Camper Nic's et al to get a bit of History out of a dock and going around the world...
We should be proud that there are people with influence that can achieve this sort of thing...

I for one am happy to hear the current exploits of GMIV and even check the GMIV web site ...

Perhaps I had a little more involvement - my boat was on the Camper and Nic's apron for some of February and I was able see what was being done to GMIV just for that short period .

What would you say if the Mary Rose were to be revived??
Not necessarily the same, I grant you, but I would hope to hear about its further journeys/voyages and developements for some time afterwards...

If my previous comment was a little negative, the one item which I did enjoy reading was the "life in the day" piece a couple of months ago about a boy (can't remember how he was disadvantaged but he was) who had clearly been given a life enhancing experience through being involved in the project.

I'm not moaning about Gypsy Moth IV. I am very impressed by the way the whole project has worked form start to finish, I believe she is a lovely boat worth the effort, and applaud C&N for the restoration work.

I also applaud UKSA for the way they are taking her on and their plans to keep her sailing.

WHat is becoming boring is the recurring material in YM et al about her.

If the enthusiasts like you are able to look at the website, you have unlimited access to the information, which is great. You won't be needing so much printed material, then.
