Just wondering if anyone is heading down towards the Plymouth area from the Solent over the 1 to 2 weeks.
We're currently stuck in Lymington and with the current forecast may be for another day or two, however with one eye on the Plymouth area and this being our first coastal passage, it would be great to cuise in company.

What's wrong with the forecast? Looks to be all northerlies so should be calm inshore. Take the scenic route through Lyme bay rather than offshore and it'll be just about flat, particularly with neap tides.

Certainly no need to wait for days.

I will be, but I'll be in the single engined Volvo after the twin RR powered Boeing.

But as others have said the forecast looks good for a run along the coast until Sunday, and Wednesday on looks warm as well.

Thats a very good point and had thought of that, but wasn't sure what effect the Northerlies 5 to 6's would have on the sea state especially round Portland Bill?

Nothing like as bad as SW 5 or 6 /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif May kick up a little bit across Lyme Bay, so I think the advice to go around the edge is on the money.

Philip,
If your worried about going round Portland Bill - then have a look at Arny's post re: Plymouth to Solent Part 1 Here it is

We travelled in company round portland and took the inside route with Arny - only thing to note is when he says 'in close' he means 'blimey that's close!!!!' the difference between him being 50 yds out and us being about 75-80 yds was amazing to see.

Don't forget we're bang on neaps and northerlies are offshore. Take the inshore passage around the Bill and I'd expect it to be flat calm. If you cut straight across lyme Bay then expect it to get pretty lumpy. Hug the coast and you'll hardly see a ripple. And it's much more ionteresting and prettier. Plus it will take no longer as offshore you'll no doubt be slowing down with lumpy seas.

As Paul said a couple of posts above, we took the inside route round Lyme Bay a few weeks ago. I'd never seen that part of the coast before and wouldn't have missed it. It is stunning. If you get the chance to watch the episode of the TV programme 'Coast' that focuses on the Jurassic coast the geology you'll see will make much more sense (trust me, it IS interesting!). We cut across Lyme Bay on the way home and I missed every minute of the coast - not because of the saftey factor but just for the beauty and interest of it. My advice, for what its worth (probably not much on here as I'm still a baby moboer with L plates well attached), would be to take the inner route - I'm sure you'll love it. Have fun /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Oh, and watch out for dolphins too - we saw them when we cut across so they are around somewhere /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks guys and girls for all your advice. We're still stuck in Lymington at the moment, but hope to be on our way West as of tomorrow!
