I was thinking of taking the family accross to Upper and Lower L. Erne. Probably wanting to take bikes and if possible a canoe. Can anyone give a personal recommendation of a charter business for hiring floating 4 person accomodation for a week. Search engines are a bit of a stab in the dark for this sort of thing. I am a sailor, but would be willing to go down the motor boat route to use as a base for exploring the area.

Many thanks

Hi. I can thoroughly recommend Manor House Marine at Killadeas, 7 miles north of Enniskillen.
http://www.manormarine.com/

The business is owned and run by a family I've known all my life, and they have the best quality boats on Lough Erne, by a big margin. Friendly staff, a great chandlery and safe parking.

I now live abroad and still go back every couple of years for a pootle round the islands in one of their boats for a week. You'll love it.

Unless things have changed a lot recently, I think you will have to settle for a motor cruiser and there are plenty of those, but they will all have been replaced since I was there so can't give an up to date recommendation. The lower (Northern) lough is quite large and open but still has lots of islands most of which have rocks off the two pointy ends, the upper lough is a maze of channels and now links to the Shannon system from Belturbet but you would need more than a week for that. Plenty of places to canoe or cycle but it can be wet !!! and navigation can be tricky on a manky drizzly day. Big houses like Castlecoole are close by.
If I was going for a motor cruiser/ cycling/canoeing week I would prefer the Caledonian Canal.

Hi Romeo,

No floating accommodation on Lough Erne, 5 boat hire firms on the Loughs ( 3 on Lower 2 on the Upper ) a number of locations with river/lake chalets, B&B and hotels and houses near the water to rent.

I am down at L Erne most weekends ( for the last 20 years ), If you want send me a PM with a telephone contact No. & I can give you a call & talk you thro things etc to see what would suit you best,

Thank you to all for your advice and suggestions. Much more helpful than relying on the commercially skewed results from well known search engines alone.

must be bad if someone from Argyll is warning.....

Why do all hire motor boats look so ugly? ( I am sure they are very practical inside!)

Shannon

Hired a boat from Carrick Craft and made one way trip right up the Shannon at Easter time. It's a wide river, in lower resches and quite beautiful.
Irish very friendly and sociable.
Good moorings.
Tullamore Dew is very good after dinner.
For music try RTE Lyric FM. A good station with a wide range and rather better than the BBC
