Just been looking at the post on part 1 Registration.

I was told by people on the forum that it would cost IR£2,000 to register my boat in Ireland. I thought this was crazy and couldn't be true.

I've now registered my boat with the Irish Dept. of Shipping and am the proud possesser of a lovely Registration Book that I would almost certainly say was made in the 1930s. (None of your modern plastic rubbish !)

The costs were 201.89 euros for lifetime registration.

165.00 euros for a Dept. of the Marine office survey.

And 10 euros for a brass type plaque affixed to the "main beam". I didn't know what the main beam was, so I stuck it onto a bulhead and it has passed an inspection.

That wasn't so bad now was it?

The best thing is, that the registration is for life. No renewals.

Don't forget to fly the red ensign as a courtesy flag when in the UK on your "Bejasus" boat.

Are small leisure boats legally obliged to fly flags when abroad?

The boat is registered in Ireland but I'm not Irish! and I'm not really into flags and all that.

Irish registered vessel = Irish Flag owners nationality and/or captain's nationality regardless. In port you need not fly flag but entering and leaving one should do so. When flying Irish Flag in UK waters you also fly red duster from appropriate position. Once on a river one is considered to be in port.

Bloody tourists...............................If you have registered the boat in Republic then you must fly the Irish tricolor from the stern.Accordingly if you enter British waters you must fly the Red ensign as a flag of courtesy to the Starboard side forward. As a small piece of advice if flying the Tricolor as I do two things...........1. Be very careful in Carlingford Lough as the border crosses the water and you will always be wrong. 2.An international signal of distress is an ensign flown upside down. Therefore unless you fly RStGYC or other club ensign the tricolor does not serve this purpose.

Hi Byron,

This is not the position in France. As French resident with French registered boat I am not allowed to wear French flag because the boat is registered as being owned by a foreign resident. Only French citizens have the right to a French flag.

Re: french owner/skipper

If the boat is french-owned (individual or company, full or part) then it can be french registered, as i understand. Cos that's what ours is. Actually, it can also be corsican registered too, but cheaper on the tax. And of course, since it is french, we don't bother with any flags at all.

You pose a difficulty. The French always were a law unto themselves. I have never commanded a French registered vessel (commercial) but were I to do so I would be required to fly the French flag. Maybe they do not have full registration for yachts as we do here in UK. In the UK a part 1 registered vessel enjoys ALL the rights of a commercial ship.

It's ownership (not necessarily command) that determines the flag in France. A French registration document is the "Acte de Francisation" for French nationals only. Foreigners resident in France have a boat "Passeport". I don't know if these confer the same rights as for a commercial vessel but I suspect they wouldn't.
