/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I'm sorry, I know it isn't funny for the poor sod whose boat it is, but that guy just looks like he is peeing at the fire & needs to drink more. Obviuosly not a forumite, we're all piss & wind so could clearly do better.

Jokes aside, you folks have got what appears to be a well organised recreational boating culture. You probably feel its over regulated, but the average plonker is pretty well educated with manditory training, before they hit the water.

What's the score in The Southern Hem?
I thought there was a basic test before one could go afloat?

Well it was a bit crap last time I was there. I rescued a boat an hour away. Whilst the life boat was to busy with a function. They wanted to take over on the way into harbour. To look glorious I suppose. I told then to F off.

In some states they have only in the last few years introduced a license of any kind.
The most stringent state license is a few hours with mostly inexperienced operators, and $50.00 and off you go. Ususally with enough knowledge to get themselves into trouble.

Our poor old volunteer services are full of good hearted folk trying to operate in grossly underfunded operations.

There are three main operatives, all competing for a handfull of crumbs. The goverment is trying to bring them all together to fly under one banner, but there is a fair bit of history, and a lot of healing to do first.

I don't know how politically "effected" your rescue services are over there, but we have had them go broke and try to claim vessels and equipment back from the volunteers, that had raised all the money to buy them in the first place.(Tasmania, recently)

They still man the radios 24 hours a day, and will risk life and limb in any conditions to come out and get you, in their malfunctioning old boats, while the government is spending millions advertising on television, telling folks how good they are, trying to get re-elected.

How does this compare?
