Good thing they qualified the pic by stating 'artists impression' 'coz it's got a long way to go before it looks like the pic /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I see you've got the English planning disease. There's always some nimbies who will object to anything and everything 'coz they can

Judging from the artists impression - they damn well should have objected. What is the point of visiting Ireland to be berthed looking at that collection of plastic apartments ??
Jee...ez - what a mess - just like 200 others around Europe !

Yes, boo! keep those rowdy Irish down, how dare they want to create jobs and bring money into their town, sure isn't Ireland all green fields anyway... /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Greystones has long been neglected and the "harbour" was rat infested and unsafe to approach (from land or sea). This development represents a facelift to a satellite town that has had been bypassed for many years. Most of the objections came from people who live nowhere near the village itself. It will bring a considerable maritime influence to the area and the wealth generated from boat folk will breath new life into the town and may now mean that people can live and work in the same area rather than adding to the mind-numbing commute to the capital.

You'd be very hard pressed to find one boat owner in the region who thinks that it's a bad development.

Re: Ireland\'s newest marina...

Yes good stuff and will spice up the rather featureless east coast too. Greystones may offer a more cozy place to berth compared to the impersonal monster sized marina in DL.

Re: Ireland\'s newest marina...

The problem with the ongoing development at Greystones is that it is seriously unsympathetic with the existing town and area. The coastline between Bray and Greystones is a huge asset to the large population of the Dublin area, being close and accessible. Greystones had so far escaped large scale development along its seafront, giving it a traditional small irish harbour town appearance, yet close to Ireland's largest city.

This development of Greystones harbour is going to change completely the character of the place. Although the harbour itself was not really useable, it was still an attractive and largely unchanged seafront of traditional buildings fronting a small harbour.

Comparing other developments in the area, I doubt many objected to the marina at Arklow. The harbour area was run down and largely disused.

The marina developments at Malahide and Dun Laoghaire have been done sympathetically with the character of their local areas and do not detract from the respective towns.

I'm not against appropriate marina development. However, I think this is not appropriate, and developing Bray harbour instead would have had much less of an impact.

However, it's too late. It's happening now, so no amount of bleating will change that. What was there is now gone forever. I'm not Irish and don't live in Ireland, so really have no cause to complain. It's up to the Irish. However, I still think it is a mistake and I'm saddened to see it happen. I suspect there will be many others who will regret it for a long time to come.

Re: Ireland\'s newest marina...

The current views are indeed very pretty, however, they're not going to knock down the mountains!

The visual impact comparison you have made is wrong IMHO. If you were to stand at the end of the new pier and face north (as is done in your photo), the view will be largely the same. Bray head and Killiney bay in the distance, will still be there. However, the biggest difference as I see it is;

* Coastal Protection Works
* Upgraded Bray / Greystones Walk
* A new Harbour
* New facilities for local sporting clubs including:
- Greystones Sailing Club
- Greystones Ridge Anglers Club
- Greystones Rowing Club
- Greystones Sea Scouts
- Wicklow Aquanauts
* Provision for a new Coastguard Station
* A new Beach Area
* A new improved Public Park
* A new Public Boardwalk
* 341 Residential Units
* New retail facilities including Cafes/Restaurants
* 230 Berth Marina

TBH, Dun Laoghaire is a massive harbour and the town was built as a result of the harbour, so any development is not going to be damaging, but Malahide marina is surrounded by apartment blocks and is very similar (but not as well planned) to the Greystones development. But no one can deny what a great addition the marina has made to Malahide. It's funny that you should pick out Malahide as complimentary and Greystones as unsympathetic when the two schemes are so similar...

I realize that the pictures do not show like for like, but there are not many pictures of the new harbour yet! However, what it does show is that a not unattractive traditional small town harbour existed before, and a thumping great marina is going to replace it, along with legoland type apartment blocks.

Re: Ireland\'s newest marina...

For a Dublin resident, your response is predictable. Have you spoken to anyone living in Greystones ? I have - Most of my family live between Dublin and Wexford and we have friends in that particular area.

"isn't Ireland all green fields anyway"

Well - no - and if people like you have your way - there will soon be none at all.

I like the idea;

"New facilities for local sporting clubs including:
- Greystones Sailing Club
- Greystones Ridge Anglers Club
- Greystones Rowing Club
- Greystones Sea Scouts
- Wicklow Aquanauts"

Has anyone guaranteed to pay for them ?

Re: Ireland\'s newest marina...

The point is if you object to everything and allow no development, you have no economy and no jobs

Re: Ireland\'s newest marina...

Interestingly many of the boats in Dun Laoghaire are owned by people in the Greystones and north wicklow area and it's they who are talking this development up. It has the support of the silent majority, but it's the new suburban hinterland that is (ironically) up in arms over "their" harbour.

The local boats (few that can actually use the harbour) all have to leave in strong Easterly winds.

It will also mean that boats from Wicklow harbour can get a safe berth.

As I said, Malahide has done very well and has lost none of the village atmosphere, in fact quite the opposite, now people are coming to visit the town instead of simply leaving it.

Re: Ireland\'s newest marina...

This is on my patch and I'm totally in favour firstly as a local resident interested in the amenity and secondly as a boater. It's the best thing that has happend in wicklow since the high court jailed the tree huggers for blocking the glen-o-downs road improvements. It will be fine on the night and I'm sure most locals who did object will find a sneaking benefit and admiration for it when completed. It will give greystones a heart beat.

Re: Ireland\'s newest marina...

Yup, I've been visiting Ireland and doing business there for nearly 30yrs so I've watched the rise of the Celtic Tiger first hand but I don't see what this has to do with a marina development
