Ipswich:New Cut velocity control barrier.

The reason for depositing dredging spoil below clamp house and by the water ski area near SYH is to replace the material being "sucked" downstream by the dredged deep water channel at Felixstowe docks. As apparently that section of the river is deeper than it "should" be although it does get shallow very quickly if you leave the main channel.

Yes it is much worse each year but I think it is the old problem in the Orwell of silt being washed down into the river system. A couple of hundred years ago it nearly killed Ipswich and that is why the dock was built and the channel dredged. At low tide now a keel boat with a metre of keel will ground just outside SYH. If you look from SYH at low tide the channel marker posts are out of the water and it would be possible to nearly walk out to the line of moored boats close to the SYH channel.

The last time they applied to do so by application through the MMO I objected and so far it has been delayed. It is getting daft now when small boats go aground just outside the main channel.

MDL were depositing the spoil from the dredging just below the clamp house when I motored past last Sunday. I understand ABP will start their dredging in April although with the large ships now gone there probably isn't the same need as last year.

The MMO have told me they were unable to influence the dumping of spoil from MDL because the permissions were granted before MMO took control. I find this weird considering MMO was set up 3 years ago and is basically the same set up as before when it was the Maritime and Fisheries people. I haven't been informed of ABP being allowed to dump in the river in April yet. I have no problem with dredging as long as the spoil is not dumped back into the river.

It was up again at 0300hrs today (Saturday) but I don't have a clue why. This is something new as I have never seen it raised before this year. Now it is becoming a common occurance?????
