Considering a night in Ipswich Haven but will be sailing single handed. What's the lock and berthing like there please ?

Easy Peasy. There is a normal floating pontoon in the lock which you just berth alongside. It is a big lock so plenty of choice of cleats usually. The waiting outside is either jilling around or tying up to a pile.
Pontoon in th emarina are pretty standard too. Recommended.

Thanks for that. I need to be in Ipswich Thursday morning, so i thought i'd sail down tomorrow, rather than drive, stay overnight and head back Thursday evening, probably spend the night at Pin Mill, coming back to Shotley Friday.

Near HW the lock is on free flow. Ring them and they will tell you when. Straight through. For a short stop you could ask for a hammer head birth.

1312 tomorrow, i'll need an early delivery of the cable to be away from here to make it by then. Would like to be away from here about 1100.

Call up the lock on ch 68 as you pass Fox's but sometimes the lock pontoon is removed if the timber ship is expected or there is a lot of barge traffic, in which case tie up to blue tubes hanging on the wall. Use a spring from the stern if entering at low tide as the turbulence can be interesting if the lockeeper is in a hurry.

Wonder i got any sleep, with the seagull scarer. For those that don't know, there is a gizmo on the side of the old Fairline shed that broadcasts a sound that is best described at sounding like a demented, ranting seagull.

Back in Shotley now, lovely and peaceful Was a nice change for a couple of days. The wind gods were most unkind though. Was almost on the nose going down, had to motor from Pin Mill and was more or less bang on the nose all the way back, under engine.
