I notice that they are currently expanding pontoons from about Spirit Yachts to nearly the lock area.

Any info on what type of boats they are hoping to attract ?

50 new berths going in for the larger bertholder... no....er...I mean the the larger boat....apparently

Thanks for that. Will probably do well for the big stuff !

I also noticed that Fairline looks a lot more lively. Four or five boats tied up. A few month's ago, there was nothing there and the place looked dead.

Hope the job situation is better now.

Less Room

There will be knowhere for the larger ships and sailing barges to dock . They will have to use the opposite quay instead. Also means less space while you wait for the lock and even less if someone on opposite side. Suppose it also means the nearer you are to the lock the more chance you have of getting in. Be like St.Kats where you have to book a couple of days in advance to get through the lock ... .. It was busy enough today and we had to wait about 20 minutes to get back in. With more boats around there could be a few longer delays . Glad were on the move ..

Talking to Captain of Orwell Lady who also pilots the tug . He says that some of the larger visitors will never manage to turn so they will have to be towed out backwards through the lock . They have used the bit of water where the new pontoons are as a turning area in the past . Suppose its just down to money in the end.

Anyway we had a great sail . Down to the cranes for lunch on a swing mooring and back . Nice breeze and warm when the sun was out :)

Ps .. According to Fairline Staff they sold 22 at Southampton .. They also said that they deal mainly with the 60ft+ in Ipswich. The new Fairline smaller model was there the other week ...

Thanks for the info. Interesting.
I think the only cargo ship left is the Suntis ? which comes about each week to Anglo Norden to unload timber.

I think it comes in nose first then backs out into the lock. Probably then turns round in the Ipswich Docks.

Could be interesting for Thames barges and the Coastguard Cutter's to turn on a windy day.

Locked back into the wet dock this afternoon with the customs cutter and just before the Suntis - they were just about to take the pontoon out- so that was good timing then! Could feel the beady eyes of the UKBA checking me out as I tied up on the lock.
I don't think the new pontoons will cause much of a problem as people will just have to listen to the radio a bit more and if the lockeeper says 15 minutes don't turn up early!

usually between 15:00 and 16:00 ish

Straight in yesterday.... mind you... not many others out there.... once past Landguard, I reckon there were no more than 6 boats out... and that was around 15:00 on a glorious sunny day with between 15 and 20kts of wind
