iPhone/iPod applications

There are some out there, but few and far between. I use an older HP iPaq 6915 with Tomtom. Gets satellite fixes, gives co-ordinates, but only a nice blue blank map and a voice saying " Turn around when possible " :)

But for checking chart plotting / fixes, its works !

Just spoken to Apple UK but as usual I got a young woman who didnt seem to know the difference between GPS and triangulation from radio masts. She insisted that the I phone did use the satellites but also the radio masts. How can you use both together? I wasnt confident about what she said

And apple US will only give answers to such questions to Americans who already own the phone.

This is system redundancy - prior to the 3G, positioning could only be by triangulation. The 3G and I presume, the 3GS has GPS, but will revert to triangulation in the absence of satellite signals. I have heard that there is an issue with the switching between the two, but you can force it into GPS mode (check that it's working) by putting the phone in airplane mode.

Got it, thanks!

If you have a look a XCWeather.co.uk there is an Ipod link on the top bar ..

Installed and running - I hadn't realised it wasn't an app as such!

XC Weather looks to be based on decoding aeronautical data with some bouys added. That you're all using this I guess means that it's the best available.

Is there no one offering a kind of "shipping forecast" in a mobile format?

Cheers,

Tony

When I use the maps on my itouch at home on the wifi or say on the free wifi at Shotley, the itouch pinpoints my position quite accurately, how does it do this as it is obviously not a phone nor does it have a GPS receiver????

XCWeather is indeed a site using wind reports from airports (it was started for gliders) but also uses the Solent MRSC, various buoys and platforms. The weather forecast is only GFS, so typically low wind speeds and no human forecasting.

If you want the inshore waters forecast etc. why not just browse to their site? I can do that on my LG PAYG phone.

Cough cough!

You are quite right! I think I'd fallen into thinking that everything had to be an app!

and you can save web pages with preferences selected as a button too, so eg Southampton 10 day forecast on weather.com is a button for me, as is the 36 hour at home etc. Makes them very accessable.

all these apps are great, my problem is keeping the thing Dry!!!, how are you guys doing that? - I am on my 3rd iPhone :-( now.
Also when you take it in to say its not working, they have embedded a moisture indicator in the charging port area, just a tiny strip that turns red when its been wet. Did not help that the little screws on mine had also started rusting.

Keepin it dry

I still haven't settled on the best case etc. Up to know I have used a 1/2 gall Ziplock bag. Didn't initially give it much thought till I was about to get in the tender... the only thing I could find was the bag, cant use the keypad through the polythene but it works to keep it dry when it's in the pocket or too near the companionway. I think from previous threads the Otterbox takes the crown for a more permanent solution, personally I like the bag :)

What's wrong with the BBC Weather site? It has shipping forecast, Inshore waters & Coastal forecast plus tide tables. All completely free. What else do you need?

I accept it isn't that easy to navigate on a tiny phone screen, but it works. I suggest you do it the first time next to your laptop so you can see which bit of the screen you should be on. Set it for your home port & save as a bookmark & Bob's your Uncle.

Thanks to both of you - implemented and I'm a happy bunny :-D

For windforecasts I use windguru.
The app is free and it provides worldwide accurate forecasts for up to a week ahead. It is a dedicated watersports app, so no airports, but seaports :-)
