iPhone dropped in marina...write off?

Boat is my home...so need to check on the boat insurance if its covered!....prob not as i was given it so have no receipts etc.

Good news is, O2 shop sorted me out with new SIM so back in business with my old backup iPhone 3G for now

Also...wonderful pro-dive guys from Specialist Group International Ltd who happen to be moored next to me have offered to have a look for it as a training dive soon as they have a spare hour

Dropped mine into the River Medina last June but was covered by the insurance on my packaged account ( thats' paid the next few years fees in one hit!!) SO if you've bought one of those accounts then do check that as well.

I too was wondering that.

Tra la! yer 'tis, LJS.

Iphones have a small capsule inside which changes colour from blue to pink when the insides are wet. I guess it's to catch out people who drop new phones into water, retrieve them, and try to claim on insurance that they haven't dropped them. A sort of tell-tale. I believe it can be persuaded to change back to blue by delicate use of a hairdryer....

Or you could buy a Sony Aqua - water proof !

It's relatively simple to dismantle an Iphone. I've replaced screens and batteries on 4/5/6s. You can buy the tools, small screwdrivers and a type of micro torx driver, from loads of vendors on the net. You do need a steady hand and good eyesight! Make a note of all the screw locations as you go. Several videos on YouTube on how it's done.

You need to flush the Phone with fresh water, the alcohol trick I've not done but I know of people who do use it. I just remove the battery asap flush with fresh water and dry in a warm place for a few days. 75% success rate if I had to guess.
This is all assuming you can actually find the phone!

Buy a second hand one and restore from backup?

I'd be very careful with IPA, I spilt some on my iPhone 5, and although it dried very quickly, it damage the screen.

The screen has a mark across it, with what look like "stars", which mark the "watermark" where the IPA partially flooded the screen.

Its still in the drink.....guys are going to have a look for it anyway as a practise dive and if found will try all yr suggestons above...intrigued to see if it can be resuscitated!

Meantime, I have gone back to my trusty old 3GS and my son is bringing his old 5s over...which i paid the contract on anyway so i think technically that makes it MINE...ha ha

Apparently the shock to an iphone may mean it refuses to turn by the normal method. If by pressing the on button as normal and nothing happens, its worth trying again by pressing the "on/off" button simultaneously with the "home" button for 10/20 seconds and seeing if the apple icon then reappears. This method worked for me.

When I did this with my Samsung (into a 45 gallon water butt,) I took the back off, cleared out the battery and sim card, dried it all and then stuck it into a bowl of rice for a day. The rice will absorb any remaining moisture being the theory.
Works fine.

To finish this story...the divers from Specialist Group International eventually retrieved the phone.....

Sadly, I think it has gone beyond rice redemption!!!

Seems the battery pack has absorbed water, swelled and burst the entire phone open!
