Apple have announced that they are abandoning 32 bit architecture for their new computers and have issued a warning that they will not run 32 bit software. I've been advised that this will involve new apps being written for existing software if it is to be useable on Apple products.

If there's a computer geek out there who can explain this to a numpty like me, I'd appreciate it. Having just been given a new iPad, how long will stuff like iSailor run on it. I seem to be getting an operating system update every few weeks since acquiring it.

Hi TC, if it's new it will be 64 bit. I think late 2013 was the end of the 32 bits.

That happened years ago now, surely?

When it happened, software didn't have to be rewritten from scratch, just rebuilt and perhaps tweaked a little by the developer. From our point of view as users it was just an update necessary for the app to continue to work on later iOS versions. I had one old app from 2010 or so which had been abandoned by its developer and that stopped working (I found a replacement which is better anyway) but otherwise the dropping of 32-bit support was a complete non-event.

True, though support for 32 bit stuff will only be withdrawn this autumn as I understand it.

Hmm. I definitely had things stop working on an iOS update because 32-bit support was dropped, and it happened quite a while ago.

Maybe this announcement is for dropping support for the last version of iOS that supported 32-bit? So if someone had a critical need for some app that hadn't been updated and was sticking to an old version of iOS for that reason, they're about to become unsupported?

Either way, I'm fairly sure the OP doesn't have anything to worry about.

I think it is indeed iOS support and yes, from iOS 11 and up 32 bit legacy apps may not work properly or at all if they're not upgraded.

See the thread on P B O forum - maybe dont install latest Ios update which has made my eye tv dongle unusable
