Ipad Pro 12.9

I was thinking of getting the jumbo sized iPad to run Navionics app (and also Outdoors GPS - ordnance survey maps).

Does anyone have experience as to whether the app(s) run on the bigger screen at full resolution ?

Yes they do, I’ve had pro about 9months amazing bit of kit, spoilt myself with large storage and cellular, only problem with it being so good I had to buy another one for someone else.

Its great on Navionics. Sadly the OS does not cover quite as far south for us so cannot comment . Either keep 'indoors' or get a decent cover - they are expensive to replace. I too went for the large storage - my wife has 2 standard iPads, one is my old one, and they have smaller storage and she is constantly juggling to save her images and videos (she hankers after my bigger screen and storage - we have found its false economy to invest in something without larger storage).

If for some reason I lost access to my Pro - I'd buy another, recommended.

I think they're fab, not only for nav. One can easily read the full websites for newspapers/journals, etc. at a sensible font, and they're really fast and feature heavy. One can also pch a handy keyboard for emails, etc.

Only drawbacks are the sunlight viewability is hopeless and as others say they are too thin to have sufficient strength at that size, so decent all-round case is a must.

Do tell us which protective case you chose as Dom mentioned a case is a must so what choices are out there. As a standard pad user I have often looked at Pro as next step. Any thoughts on how to mount on board ?

Just been playing with new toy - Navionics looks AMAZING ! Much better display/user interface than any chartplotter. And the additional size above my old iPad (which I hardly ever used) seems to make a lot of difference.

I'm only using it in the cabin, so haven't got a proper protective case (just a soft padded one from the Apple shop).

Until you find something (a case) that looks 'the business' I very strongly recommend you get yourself a decent zip lock bag - unless you sail a masted gin palace into which no water enters the accomodation. Its too, too easy to rush in wet and panicking - and subsequently need a new iPad!
