iPad not fit for navigation purposes

Due to the prohibitive costs of keeping dedicated plotter charts up to date, I use the iPad charts which are cheap enough to keep updated, to double check my route and plan to make sure nothing has changed.

This would seem to be a good solution. Best of both worlds. When the chartplotter arrives on my boat, I’ll be keeping the iPad updated so if the weather gets grotty or the sun is too bright, no problem.

My friend has just sent a (refurbished) ipad3 back to seller as its overheating in sunny conditions. Be interesting to see what they say.

My Samsung android tablet also shut down last weekend - mind you I had left it lying in the cockpit, it's black and was HOT - but works OK normally in the shade under the spray hood.
