Like many on here, I try to keep up with whats available for navigation on the boat, like most dismally. :)

But that said, The Admiral treated me this Christmas to an Ipad and to be honest I still haven't got my head around it fully. Last night I was looking at what was available on the App store for navigation and there are many programs for navigation, some I have never seen before and some I wasn't the slightest bit interested in.

Little Ship runs Cmaps and to be honest, probably because thats what I'm use to I prefer them to others that I have seen. Now..... Jeppesen have Cmap charts of the whole of the Uk and Channel for £26.99 available for Ipad and Iphone use so I have downloaded them. I thought that they would be a good backup if something went wrong with the charts and/or computer on LS.

I have to say that there are some very good features and for the price I don't think they can be beaten. As I said my preference maybe due to familiarity but I thought that others would be interested as Cmap wide charts from other sources are well over £100. You can find then in the App store.

Do you have the 3G ipad? If so, it can be a backup plotter as it has a GPS engine (for some reason the non 3G version doesn't, though you can add an external one). I've downloaded the Navionics app, because I use Navionics on the main plotter, and it works well.

Cmaps give you Tidal flow speeds and Tidal curves for HW and LW, along with weather, wave, temperature ect (with internet access)

I'm not saying one is better than the other but Cmaps is the one I prefer and it is a great price.

When running these charts it shows GPS on the screen ..... totally confused now :confused:

I have the "Europe" map, which is obviously a pre-release of the 2018 version as it excludes the UK. It cost about £45. The UK & Holland map costs about the same. I also have both on the i-phone, and they cost less than a quid each!

It's interesting to see a definite swing towards the iPad and the various navigational apps that are available.
Not so very long ago many people on the forum wouldn't hear of such folly.
Personally, I think they are brilliant value and wouldn't be without mine as a third back-up.

Only 3G iPads have GPS, it's part of the 3G chip. Non 3G iPads show approximate position by triangulating from known position wifi signals, doesn't work at sea!
 
If you had a wifi Ipad, and an Iphone (or other phone with wifi hotspot functionality), could would use the Phone wifi with the ipad navionics system to get a good enough position to use as a plotter at sea?

We invested in an I pad back in December, unaware of the imbedded GPS issue purchased a bog standard wi-fi model, just went back to John Lewis Poole. And they refunded and resold me a cell / GPS enabled I pad 2 months after the original purchase.

Apple have a 14 day no quibble refund policy and this applies either in store or if the item was purchased online. ( and I've just realised this means anywhere!!)

I do have full set of charts on the boat computer but thought these would be good backup....hopefully I won't get to use them in earnest.

Now can I get my fabulous music connection on the Ipad to tempt the Scottish contingent. :-)
