I'm not sure which is best; the Garmin GLo or the GNS1000 ?

Yes, in which case the Digital Yacht NMEA wifi is the best though soon to be supplanted by a new Comar unit that's bidirectional so waypoints in Navionics can be used by your autopilot. As the usual suspects have already been suggested I'll throw an alternative in. If you're going to use the ipad in conjunction with some nmea-to-wifi device for navigation, I *think* (someone else can perhaps confirm or deny: I own neither iNavX or an ipad) that iNavX will take GPS out of an nmea-over-tcp stream, so you can just use your boat's GPS (as well as the other NMEA data).
Apple have an exchange policy...return it in 14 days and just pay the difference if you are upgrading. I did exactly what you did and realised my mistake...
That's my preferred method - relying on external plug-ins/cables etc may catch you out in the long run.
As others have mentioned - buy the 3G/Wi-Fi option but don't bother putting a sim card in it. I use my wife's iPad 2 3G/Wi-Fi with Navionics and Imray charts, and never needed a 3G simcard or contract.
Incidentally, I also have an iPhone and use this, connecting the two devices via the Bluetooth connection, to upload updates/charts to the iPad when away from Wi-Fi. Just make sure your data plan is robust......

At £96 it's about the same price as the extra you would pay for a 3G iPad with GPS built in.... So I still think returning it for an exchange would be favourite.
Or is there a benefit to having an "external" or "removable" GPS unit?
I have a pay as you go sim card in my iPad 1 for emergencies.
I've got the INavX and digital yacht Iais set up. 90 % of the time we sail in local waters and don't need plotter info, so when our existing plotter packed up this looked like a cheap way to get the inf when we need it.
Only thing I would say is you need turn the iPad settings auto lock to 'never' or it disconnects the digital yacht information when the screen powers down.
The battery life is then down to maybe 8 hours. Mines next to a 12v socket so no problem, but thought worth a mention.
If you specified navigation and you were sold one without 3G, take it back and ask them for one with 3G. It will cost £100 more, but its what you need.
If they wont help, quote the Sale ofGoods Act, in writing if necessary, making it clear that you will go legal if necessary.
This is a lot of money to be given blatantly bad advice over!
Is iNavX just a bridge between NMEA AIS and Navionics? Basically will I still be using the Navionics program if I use the iAIS kit?
