I'm installing a 1500W inverter and want to do it safely. The instructions say to 'connect the chassis ground lug to the boat's grounding system' - now I'm confused with terminology - where is my grounding system?

Boat ground system is normally (inboard) engine block connecting to alternator (-) Battery (-) Prop shaft anode and hull anode.
You can have a Positive(+) Ground System, but it isn't that common (sorry) these days.

Don't know what make of inverter you're fitting, but Trace Engineering publish some excellent installation advice in their owners manuals; I found the answers to my questions there recently. You can download a Trace owners manual by going to www.traceengineering.com/document_depot/manuals/975-0006-01-01.pdf and downloading the manual as an Acrobat file. It also has good advice on wiring sizes, fuses, etc.
