Intrepid Yacht Designer Rescued

Can't beat a true British eccentric, they should have let him reach the shipping lane before rescuing him. He might have got it working by then.

Hum.

'The lifeboat insisted on towing him back to the beach because he would have caused all sorts of grief had he continued.'

Didn't they have to apologise to somebody else recently for insisting they took a tow?

Look Familiar???

He didn't get far enough to have learnt anything. No doubt he will try again. Seeing as he was under close observation from "helpful citizens", he could have been left sailing until say twylight by which time he might have become cold and hungry.

" We warned him against taking it to sea again but at the end of the day we have not got the authority and cannot stop him.' "

And quite right too! Can you imagine what would follow if an H&S inspired MCA had the authority to stop us going to sea?

It looks like he made a fair job of it. It looks like the rudder was never going to work, perhaps he should have assembled twin rudders on the hulls. It feels like the hulls could be further apart - don't know why. I guess the dead flat bottom to the hulls may be a problem but easily fixed with a dagger (or lee) board or 2. Otherwise it looks sailable. I look forward to Mk2.

It has a few interesting features, the shape of the decks for one. IIRR Warram's first attempt was flat bottomed and not a lot different in shape, just somewhat larger. At least this guy tried, instead of booring people down the pub..
H&S would have jumped on Shane Acton, but he managed to learn sailing and navigation 'on the job' after leaving land.

Anybody know why he couldn't set the sail?

Have seen worse - much worse - at every Amateur Yacht Research Society 'Weymouth Speed Week' over the past 20 years and more.

Have a hunt through the links...

Those who enjoy rekindling old arguments might like the assertion that sailboards/windsurfers and their ilk were first designed by an AYRS member and first appeared at an AYRS 'Speed Week'. So also the embryo kitesurfer....

Cranks? Avant garde thinkers?

:D
