Internet dongle?

I would like to add that Vodafone in their wisdom have cut down on the available usage, whether original or later dongles.

Originally, the dongles gave 3Gbytes for £15 and then Vodafone stopped the unlimited time and introduced the £15 for 3 Gbytes per month (as others have said above).

About 4months ago, Vodafone sneakily reduced the allowance to 2Gbytes per month at a rolling charge of £15.

I've got the the original K3565 dongle (1GB for £15, not 3GB) and the unlimited time deal still seems to be available. I've just bought another 1GB today with according to their website no limitation on its use. At present I use Three mostly, but with the 30 day expiry it's OK in the summer, but at other times of the year I'll use Vodafone for occasional access.

Another option is the 3g Kindle. the web browser is a bit clunky, but perfectly adequate for weather and news

I got one of these for that very reason. It's fine, as you say, for weather maps - my main use - and also email etc. One limitation is that the browser only supports one open window at a time, so that I can't open an email attachment (unless anyone knows a work around?)

Why get a dongle

Why get a specific dongle if you have the right phone. I used to access the internet via my Sony Ericsson W706 connected by its lead to laptop. Now I have a HTC desire. Even easier to access the Net as it acts as a wireless hotspot. The internet access is included in my monthly tariff and there seem to be no limit to downloads. I am on T-mobile

Maybe because the monthly tariff on an HTC desire is nearly as much as the outright purchase of a Vodafone dongle?

I have the old Vodafone dongle....had it 2 years now and there is still £9 of credit left on it from the original £15 and that's using it a fair bit. As said earlier the airtime does not time expire as the newer versions do so if and when I need to top it up my £15 should last another 3 years!!!

Just done a trip Troon-Kirkwall via Cape wrath and there were not many area's I could not get a signal....that said they were all GPRS as no G3 signal available on that route, GPRS download very very slow but OK for the met charts I was downloading....Facebook was very slow though!!

I've had a Vodafone K3565 for a couple of years although it's from Vipnet Croatia who have a technical arrangement with Vodafone. It's the same as the UK Vodafone K3565 dongle although it is not locked - I think the Vodafone UK ones are.

However, the recharge only lasts 300 days, unless I top it up before the 300 days run out which then preserves it for a further 300 days, rather then being unlimited. This is fine with me as I use it on several trips a year.

I wonder why my top-ups are not unlimited like the UK K3565s?

In reality, the posts, including my own, that say the K3565 time is unlimited aren't strictly accurate. You do have to use it every so often, otherwise the account is suspended. I forget the exact periods, but it might be once a year or so, probably similar to yours in fact.
A brief log on/log off is all that's required to keep it going.

The Vodafone contracts where the top-up doesn't expire are not unlimited. They must be used at least once every 180 days or else the contract is terminated.

Vodafone account

None of you have mentioned having a Vodafone account. I have one from work, and I have a dongle on it too that is £6.50 month and is unlimited usage. It works!

Incidentally, someone was saying they have problems with Vista. I did too but upgraded to Win7 and no problems since with dongle, or anything else for that matter.
