Reading that Micron Extra lasts for two years , two years ago I put two coats on , as reccomended , plus an extra coat of Uno over the top (I had some left)
It's now in it's second year , have had it sprayed off but it's exhausted and will not last the season without reducing my speed etc. etc.

So , no it does not do two years in my experience and it's expensive

What results have you had with Micron Extra ?

My boat lives in Plymouth.

What results have you had with other antifoulings in Plymouth ?

TIA

I did manage to get 2 years out of mine, but if you read the literature it says that for 2 seasons you need 3 coats. Having tried Cruiser Uno, which was next to useless, I'm going back to Micron.

Can't give you any info about Plymouth, but I can give you info about Micron. If you apply it according to the instructions, it should give you 2 years' protection. Antifouling is expensive stuff, and so most people apply it thinly with a roller. That doesn't give sufficient film thickness for 2 years' protection. The answer is to give the boat 2 good coats by brush, using the amount of antifouling suggested by International's calculator.

My boat is lifted every other summer for antifouling. It gets 2 good coats by brush, and a topside polish, then goes back in the water for another 2 years. It works.

PVB , yes that could be the issue , I applied two coats by roller , 5ltrs for my 24 footer.
perhaps thats not enough. It broke down completely on the edges of the keels where big beasties became attached , in about 1 season.
Hmmmmmmm

The last 4 years Micron has been fine for 2 seasons for me. 5 lts for 26ft hull. Usually dry out against a wall for mid season scrub just to keep it sweet, but usually just rub off some slime. Tend to stay in over the winter every other year so it all remains wet. When she comes out for a few weeks the Miron on mine has become very flakey needing a good scrape, so therefore have had to re-anitfoul. Suspect it doesn't perform so well during hot summers.

Hi

Applied 2 coats of Micron in October 2008 and at present there seems to be enough to last until next lift out booked for end of September this year. So OK for us will us again--in fact have bought the tins already.

During a visit to International paints years ago an old timer there told me the secret of antifouling is to put Primer below it, and, let each coat have enough drying time!.

I have used Micron Extra on my Motor Sailer for the last six years and do not lift out between for two years at a time.

I put International 'Primocon' primer on first 'then' two coats of Micron Extra, yes it needs doing 'after' two years, but, I also do not remove the old antifoul completly, jet wash off, check for any dings etc, sander all over, wash off, completly left to dry out, then primer first.

I find that, in Gosport, 2 coats of Cruiser Uno works really well for 2 years. Yep I know that the whole point of Cruiser Uno is only one coat is all you need, but it works for me so that is what i am sticking to.

Hey everyone,

I am in the process of picking an antifoul to go over the 'bright white' antifoul thats currently on my sailboat.

I understand that Micron Extra is compatable with the current antifoul so I'm going to give it a go.

I keep the boat in the water year round at Gosport Marina and hope to get 2 years from the Micron Extra. My question is this - has anyone had any experience with power washing the hull at the 1 year mark? I'd like to get some of the slime off the bottom but worry that the Micron Extra will come off, and I'll be left with having to reapply every year.

Many Thanks in advance for your advice.

Power washing will take some of the antifoul off.

We use micron extra but are in different circumstances as a) we lift and renew it every winter and b) the boat is berthed in freshwater but sailed in saltwater (kept in Cardiff Bay) so the continual salinity changes are bad for beasties of either type. We usually only have a light slime at season's end. Specifically with power washing, we find relatively little comes off- certainly less than could be addressed with a paintbrush in half an hour- but we are only ever power washing season old antifoul, not stuff that has been on the hull for two years. Short of coppercoat I think asking for multiple seasons from antifoul is a false economy relative to the other costs of boating. Just an opinion of course.

Cheers
