with the fleet review and other celebrations etc, I am being pressured to have some form of dress overall capability. I know that bunting is the cheapest, but if I must go down this route, I would rather have the correct international code flags. The cheapest I have found so far is £60, does anyone know of a better deal?
 
No, there is a cheap set available in nylon. I picked one up at a jumble for around £20and I have seen the same type quite a few times since. It is also possible to buy ready-made strings of flags for dressing overall though I don't know where you'd get them.
 
Local party shop ...

You get cheap strings of plastic flags ... St. George, Union Jack, etc. etc.

Even to biggies ......>

Look closely and you'll see the bunting along the edge of the white canopy ... of course you can't miss the biggies ....

Union Jack bunting about fiver for 25ft .... big flags 5.99 each ...

The strings I have seen are authentic international code flags but in alphabetical order. I'm sure there's a marine novelty company bashing them out somewhere.

I have seen the set of bunting in order as interco, but they are abt £25, and you would need at least 2 of them to dress overall, whereas the proper set when joined would be as long as three sets of this bunting!
 
My flag set ...

in its fancy red roll .... is certainly not that long and would not dress my boat overall .... and I only have a 25ft MS ....

When I made up a set for my ex's birthday ... actually happened to be the day it all turned around ... I only got up the forestay and a little spare .... so 3x ????

The red roll flags are only small and nothing like the full size jobs !!

My set has flags about the same size as a courtesy ensign and the length between toggle & loop is around 60 cm so the set stretches to around 24m which is near enough to dress overall with my 15m stick, especially if I dig a few others out of the flag bag.

The set is in the usual red wallet so it's probably the same one.

p.s. when was the last time you used a code flag set for its original purpose???

Woo hoo I did last year on the mooring at Aberdovey. After the two dinghies hit my pulpit with their booms and the rest were so close I could see the time on their wristwatches I flew some.

Don't remember which, the closest in racing codes to suggest, naff off and leave us alone. Did not work though!

HMTQ's official birthday tomorrow, I generously let her share it with me every 7 years or so, salutes, squaddies on Horseguards and all:-)

Should one stick up all the flags for the day, and what if you don't have a set?

That appears to be the same as is on sail at £60-£70 so you got a real bargain!

I guess like most people, the only ones that are used are diving and customs flags, but if by doing this, I get SWMBO onboard again, it will have been worth it.

Don't put them up then!

You could dress ship with masthead Ensigns. When I was in the RN we would do this ona 'dress ship' day if we were going to sea later in the day rather than dress overall and have to take it all down a few hours later.

What no one can tell me though is if the ensign at the stern and the masthead should match ie can you put a red at the masthead if you have a blue at the stern! (I don't have 2 blues but I still have a red from my last boat)

doubt it matters as a recent survey in the uk revealed over 60% didnt know what the red ensign was ..........
and us an island nation - where did we go wrong ?
