i have a question for the knowlegable ones on here :rolleyes:

i have a simple garmin gps unit on board and a yeoman plotter mounted at the chart table , now what i would like to know is can i add other stuff ie a gps repeater in the cockpit and also a dsc radio all workng from one gps unit ??.

Get yourself an IP66 junction box from Maplins.
You should be able to join them all up together using the same wires.
12v +
12v -

NMEA Out (From Garmin)
NMEA Shield or Ground (from Garmin)

Connect NMEA Out (from Garmin to :
NMEA In on DSC
NMEA In on Repeater
NMEA In on Yeoman

Connect NMEA Shield (from garmin) to:
All NMEA shields and grounds from
DSC
Repeater
Yeoman

You can put up to 4 listeners to each talker, so it should work.
The talker, in this case, is the Garmin GPS unit.
Listener 1 Yeoman
Listener 2 DSC
Listener 3 GPS Repeater

I did this on my Limbo 6.6, and ran a single power feed for all of them from the junction box.

If you have a Garmin 72 (like me), you can get the Data cable and power it from the ships 12v system, as they positively eat AA batteries.

If you need a hand, let me know and I will come and do it for you.

i will head off to maplins soon .

i have a garmin 120xl which has a data cable , hopefully it shouldnt be to difficult to connect all bits n peices together . :rolleyes:
 
I (as always) bow to F-C's knowledge but can suggest that this NMEA wiring can usually be halved in volume by connecting each NMEA negative lead to the negative power lead on each device concerned. This way, you only have to connect the NMEA positive leads to each other as per JIm's details.

I kind of agree, except you might create a ground loop, and the normal negative power is not a shielded cable, so could have some noise interference.
 
Hmmm, thought you might say that. Our present boat is wired that way (at least, the stuff I've added is!) and so far no probs, but then perhaps I've been lucky.
 
once again thanks for the info , i will have to see if i can print this so i dont forget and can also take it to the boat :rolleyes:

i will need another junction box now , yesterday while looking at the 3 deck plugs in front of my mast and discussing potential leaks in my newly repaired coach roof i have decided to fit a stainless swan neck ( 1 hole ) and lead all my nice new wires/cables from the mast down inside to a j/box and back to main panel from there .

well thats the plan :cool:

Yes and no. It might work and often does, but some later equipment doesn't always like it wired that way. So where possible, i'd say use separate wires, particularly with a new installation.

To keep the wiring simple and tidy, you can use phone cable, alarm cable, or better yet, CAT5 cable. If the repeater is very low power consumption (most are), it should be OK to power it via a pair of wires in any of the cables above.

Oh, just to be awkward, a lot of early Garmin stuff only has NMEA In+ and Out+ wires, the - uses the 12v ground. In which case, when wiring the listeners, try wiring only the + wires and see if it works. If it doesn't, connect the listener NMEA In - to 12v ground too.

I have a Yeoman, DSC and a Clipper repeater all driven fron a Garmin 128 fixed GPS.I also have a feed to my radar which shows a lolipop on the screen which represents a waypoint.I E mailed garmin when I was adding the DSC and they said the 128 would easily feed 4 receivers and usually more.

I run 6 NMEA listeners off my Garmin 128 without problems

VHF
Yeoman
radar
autohelm/seatalk system
ICS Navtex/NMEA repeater
AIS on PC
