I recently wrote to the secretary of a Mooring Association asking for my name to be put on the waiting list which I know exists.
In due course I received a reply noting my request and informing me that the Association committee had decided to request £10 from anyone applying to be placed on the waiting list. The letter ended with the marvellous statement 'it should be noted that there is no likelihood of you getting a mooring in the forseeable future.'
So - why the tenner?

As a semi-Scot, I'm suprised that you need to ask! Or maybe it's the cynical Southerner in me?

<hr width=100% size=1>my opinion is complete rubbish, probably.

Beware the Crown Estates

If the waiting list gets too long, they increase the ground rent, being no strangers to the laws of supply and demand, whilst remaining a monopoly themselves, of course.

Watch out for Big Ears and his tart

Would this be in the Duchy of Cornwall by any chance ?

Where Big Ears will happily rip off anyone.

No - Scottish west coast - very close to where Big Ears' sister keeps her boat

Re: Watch out for Big Ears and his tart

Think yourself lucky - only £10 - Troon Cruising Club is £50 just to go on the waiting list plus your annual subs. O.K. the £50 is a one off payment and is refunded when (if ) you get a mooring or if you pull out and stay in the marina or else where. It helps keep the waiting list smallish as only those who really are interested in a mooring will fork out the dosh.

Mind you, similiar situation, no mooring in the foreseeable future but maybe next year. SHMO decided boat would be kept in marina (in this case SHMBO) as she was not using the tender every time to get out to the boat (must admit - one of her better decisions)

Re: Watch out for Big Ears and his tart

Hmm - well the issue over the tenner is more to do with the forseeable future phrase. I cannot for the life of me understand why I should be charged a tenner to be put onto a list for something that sounds fairly unlikely to happen. A tenner is such a small amount that it is hardly likely to buy my commitment and it doesn't cost that to stick my name on a list - so, I ask the question again - why the tenner?

Agree - £50 or £100 would be more likely to attract serious people only. £10 is a waste of time though it did put you off so one less on the waiting list.

Have you actually seen the waiting list?

Re: Watch out for Big Ears and his tart

Obviously a scam - apparantly Arsenal FC are doing the same for season tickets at their new ground. £50 a year - little chance of getting a ticket - but another income stream for the club.
Yours could be tenner this year, 15 the next then 20,30 etc.
You should ask when they expect your turn to come around, how many years, if they do n't know - then do n't bother as somebody else will either build another Marina, or lay down more moorings near-by before your turn coms up, with no waiting list. just keep your ears to the water!

No - not seen the waiting list and I'm unlikely to ask as they'd probably run down the client confidentiality route.
The only reason I applied was so that I might be able to reduce my outgoings in 5 years when I retire. Stuff it - I'll not bother with them.

Re: Watch out for Big Ears and his tart

remember those prefab type bungalows (most with a grey-ish stone pebbledash) up on the hill to the south looking down on the moorings? pretty ordinary, i thocht but fine to keep a glaswegian locked up in as they'll be used to the typical Bar L architectural style. well, got the scotsman and saw one for sale .... £350k ... crivvens, the surprise is its only a tenner they want ....

To shorten the waiting list, of course. You're not going to put your name on ten such lists if they all charge you for it. In Belgium in the marina of Blankenberge the charge you 700 euro a year to be on the waiting list for a berth. Narrows it down to those who really want to be on it.

But if £10 is going to achieve this? Doubt it.

Yes - I can see that a higher sum may put me off, but £10 is hardly going to do that even to an impoverished lecturer
