Brave people died or were horribly injured in in Iraq and Afganistan. My mates were operational and frontline then. Your post does you no credit, you might want to reconcider. .
Actually, it was 16 years in the RN, serving in the Gulf during both the conflicts you mention (and others elsewhere) and many friends in the RAF (and also Army but keep that quiet).

So no, I don't want to reconsider but maybe you could mention it to your gallant comrades and they could explain a joke to you?

There is a lot of difference in my mind between a joke with people you know and posting on a open forum when you have no idea of the personal circumstances and history of the people you are imposing your humour on.

No biggie, let's agree to disagree.

Touchy lot you 'forces' types!
Chill and talk about sailing, or someone will start singing about Royal Marines.

I don't understand the 'it was upwind so we had to motor-sail' comment.
I would have expected a Southerly to go OK?

The boat does sail reasonably to windward but with the wind dead on the nose and some foul tide progress was slow as you would expect. We chose to motor sail part of the way to maintain progress and get to Salcombe in time for dinner. We left later than was ideal because of crew travel issues.

On a weekend boys jaunt like this I am happy to use the motor in such circumstances but would prefer not if possible.

My boat is a Southerly 100 which has a undersized rudder due to it's lifting keel and minimum 0.7m draft with the keel up.. A combination of big quartering seas, too much sail and strong winds caused the boat to round up as the rudder was overwhelmed. First time I had experienced this on my new boat.

Interesting to hear real life experience of the Southerly range. We have been looking at various models (100, 110, 115) and later iterations have twin rudders, presumably to address the issue that you describe. The trade off appears to be the loss of prop-wash making it a little trickier in close quarters manoeuvring. That and the higher price of later models! 😉

As an east coast based mobo type who also like sailing there is a big appeal to a shallow draft and the ability to comfortably take the ground.

Fine, understood. But, I can guarantee that I could say the same thing to your friends within 2 minutes of meeting them for the first time and they would understand and laugh.
