Interdeck removal

Has anyone ever removed interdeck non slip paint and if so how?
On my boat the non slip was originally fine stippled pannels and part of the moulding process and they are very slightly proud of the surrounding gel coat and had been painted at some stage with blue interdeck but there are areas where this is flaking and needs repainting. Will i need to scrape all of it off or can it be sanded down flat after removing the lose flaking stuff?

Just.scrape off the flaky bits, sand with 60 grit and repaint. Almost impossible to remove, even from a plain surface and not necessary.

I did this some years ago on a Trapper 500, a local boat specialist suggested scarping and abrading the flaking bits and then most importantly de-grease very thoroughly with a good degreasing agent and scrub it well into the non slip surface. I worked for me and gave me 6 years good service and was still good when I sold it.

I have exactly the same problem and have had a specialist blaster undertake a trial with good results. He tried soda first which did work but was quite a bit slower than using Garnet as the blasting medium. With the Garnet the original stippled finish is left intact although I suspect it may be knocking off a little bit of the original sharp edges. I am expecting to blast the whole deck at the start of April so will let you know how it goes after that.

Thanks guys for the advice. There is very few lose flakey bits and only on a few of the pannels so long as i can get them feathered down to get a reasonably tidy job i think i will opt for the sanding option.
Is it necessary to sand the sound areas for repainting or can they painted directly as would imagine there should be a good etch due to the paint type?

Read the product data sheet for the paint you intend using and follow the recommendations.

I have heard of some people removing the flaking areas, then using a 2 part filler to bring to the same level and then repaint.
