Insurnce Companies

GJW only only insure you if based in marina, have tried several times but each time they say it has to be marina based, never had any claims with present insurer.

Thats not the case ive been with GJW for many years and always been on a swinging mooring without any problem. Single handed , night passage single handed, 12 months cover all accepted by them except December to March if any claim arises the excess is double when any of the last 3 are being practised. . Only claim Ive ever had was a total loss 14 months ago amounted to £32,000 they paid up in 2 weeks and when I reinsured a new boat with them they gave me 20% no claims discount (which I couldnt believe ) as your allowed 2 claims a year without losing your no claims discount. Would I recommend GJW? 100% a brilliant company, and the premiums are not high by any stretch of the imagination

I knew 2 people with GJW who had boats on swinging moorings, both had claims ( one a write-off ) - which is how I know which company they were with, and both were dealt with extremely well.

I have had boats on swinging moorings for 40 years, present mooring is fairly sheltered(half tide).Usually check the mooring every time I visit the boat so know what to look for ,only had one claim for a damaged sail which came loose 15 years ago.Even gave them the specification of the chain(half inch). But they wont insure the boat, saying they dont insure on swinging moorings.

peteK,

there must be something wrong there, did you get the YTS boy or something ?!

My lot, Haven, won't cover swinging moorings in winter, insist on marinas or ashore, but summers on a swinging mooring are fine, as for GJW - or were you trying for 12 months on a swing, maybe that's it ?

They cover me for 12 months on swinging mooring but should a claim occur between Dec and March the excess is double. had the same company for last 8 years. Even when I moved around the coast to West Mersea once again on a swinging mooring they covered me without any problem. Any one who knows West Mersea will know theres no marina there, and many of the boat owners there use GJW

Yes maybe thats the reason but why would present company be quite happy to insure for 12 months in commision, but not GJW.

That's exactly what I was told when I put my claim In, '2 claims in any 1 year' before it affects my no claims!!

Fantastic!

Told me they would cover the usual months so excluding 'Oct to March' on a swinging but would cover In a Marina during that time.

Ive just pulled out my policy and its states that a laying up period doesnt apply if the company gives written permission for a 12 months cover. If you wish to query the reasons as to why they wont cover you then may i give you the name of the lady who would give you the answer. Her name is Debbie Ashton tel no 0151 473 8000, she is the one who ive dealt with this year. She is the yacht underwriter for the company. I hope you can get some satisfaction or at least an explanation.

It was the underwriter who refused cover saying that they dont cover 12 months in commission on a swinging mooring,if they had taken me on when I first applied they would have had 15 years of premiums without a claim.
